So I was driving on the interstate on my way home from college tonight and I noticed something shadowy crossing the road and when I got closer, it stopped right in the freakin middle of the road and looked straight at me. I ran it over of course because there was people on the right side of the lane so I couldn't move over. But omg! I felt so bad afterwards. :(

Have any of you guys ever run over any poor animals crossing the road on accident? Or on purpose.... o.o;

I have only ran over a thing or two that was already dead.

My mother ran over a dog. Because she wasn't even LOOKING at the road....didn't even try to miss it (she could've swerved one way or another-no other people were around)

And remember, some animals are very stupid.

I'm assuming since it was on an interstate....she couldn't stop. Those are usually 70mph. If an animal is in your way....and you can't swerve...no amount of braking will get you to stop and that animal to live. Brakes aren't that good yet.

@Yokuutsu - oh no! A dog? Poor thing. :( I'm pretty sure what I ran over was a raccoon. It just stood there and looked right at me when I went closer to it...it could have moved.

@Chocobo - I definitely could not stop and not in time anyways. Plus driving on the interstate? That's just dangerous. I was going like 75mph at the time and there was a car on the right lane beside me. It was safest for me to just keep driving and hoped I didn't run over it.

@Lioshika - Oh really? I don't think I've ever heard anybody hit a bird before. Did it damage your windshield?

well then what about slowing down with your brake lights showing, you had ample time for that, as soon as you saw something in the road you should have slowed down, surly if it was a person you ran over it'd be a big deal as it stands you chose convinence over life

Do you drive? I'm just curious because if you do drive then you now how impossible it is to slow down enough when your going 75 on the interstate at night time. And I did say I felt bad over it. And if it was a person, they wouldn't be standing in the middle of the interstate at nighttime. Would you rather have me swerve to the right or have the cars behind me run into me since I braked suddenly?

i do drive, and at night to boot on a bike and i've made fast stops in heavy traffic and on the interstate(though at 65) there are trees everywhere where i live and i have /never/ run over an animal or gotten hit for braking to let one pass, if i can do it on two wheels which is signifigantly harder to do safely then you have little excuse

Not to sound gross, it hit more the grill of my car and made a little thud and then continued over the car and onto the road.

@chocobo - well, this is the first time it's happened....but next time, I'll know how best to avoid it. I've been driving for many years and it's never happened before so this made me feel really bad. And you've made me feel worse. lol ^^; But next time, I will try to avoid it if I can since I don't want to hurt little critters.

Yes, same situation as yours with a possum. The feeling under the tire was oddly satisfying yet disgusting at the same time. Like stepping on a big bug with your boot.

I'd like to state something here....it would be easier for you to manuever around the racoon/dog/whatever since your vehicle, a motorcycle, doesn't take up an entire lane.

And cars can't just stop like that. Usually when the animal is within the line of sight....it is too short of a distance for a car to stop in which means the animal is getting hit. I know since I was in the car with my mother when she hit the dog. She had less than a second to stop/swerve when it was in the middle of the road. And that second includes the time it takes for your brain to realize HO' SHIT! THERE'S A DOG! So you have less than second at night. During the day....a little bit different.

But cars don't stop the second you push on the brakes no matter how hard you press and cars? Are big and harder for animals to dodge and for humans to get them to swerve than a motorcycle.

And if you stopped going 65 that quickly on a motorcycle, you should've went flying and have severe trauma since motorcycles do not have seatbelts.

I've been fortunate to not experience such things. I don't drive but whenever I'm in a vehicle and an animal begins to cross the road there is usually no one of the other side or no one behind us so we can stop.

one of my boyfriends did that back in 09 and I freaked out and started to cry, all he did was laughed and called it a suicide squirrel. We were on a busy county road so we couldn't swerve or stop for the little critter
