Wisdom Teeth | #1 | |
Most people have...or had them, so now there's a place to talk about them lol.
So mine first : D My dentist has been telling me for over a year that I should get them out. I've been told since elementary school that my mouth doesn't have enough room. I've been having headaches and the like...which might be wisdom teeth related or not. So, I'm a college student which means I still have dental coverage until I graduate this coming spring. So I finally manned up and got them removed this past monday. He was cute btw (the dentist surgeon dude). No drinking for like ever so I was thirsty as hell. They removed them. I was numbed up and I went to Wal-Mart to get my script...while I bled all over myself/slobbered all over myself. Then I went home and took my pill. The aftermath didn't really hurt even if I hadn't taken my pills in forever...but maybe that's just me. A few days later and I was willing to eat chicken nuggets (apple sauce starts sucking fairly quickly) So, what are ya'lls experiences with wisdom teeth-removal or not? Any horror stories? They won't bother me since mine are already gone. Anything else related lol

I still have mine, they havent moved or attempted to break skin. The doc said there are cases where they just stay there and don't need removed.
I had my back top left molar taken out back in may. It was annoying that I had to eat mushy stuff and soup constantly.. I took strawberries and blended them just so i could eat something that tasted good. I wasn't in pain much.. they gave me some kind of pain killer but we didn't have the money to get it filled so i just used the average ibprophin. which is supposedly weaker then what they gave to me. I'm gonna hate it if my wisdom teeth have to be taken out =( I don't have room in my mouth for them either ;-;

Do you not have insurance?
Because my pain pills were less than 20 dollars without insurance. With insurance...they were a dollar. Most cases they have to be removed...due to no space I've heard. And the later you wait, the worse it is since like teenager and young adult's wisdom teeth roots supposedly aren't very developed and makes it easier and stuff I heard. Also, when you get older (I mean a lot older) there are more chances of complications during surgery. After a couple of days....I got tired of applesauce and pudding. IT wasn't comfortable eating chicken nuggets but it was FOOD! I was so happy to have meat again lol

Ah, I recall getting mine out...learned a lot of things. However, before that....
My teeth were growing in all sorts of weird. My lower left tooth was growing parallel to the roots of my other teeth, and my upper right tooth was growing as though it was trying to come out of my face. So suffice to say as soon as they showed up I had to set up times to get them surgically removed. As my family has a weird issue with novicane, it doesn't numb the area they intend it too, we knew I'd have to be put under. However, that requires needles, and I haaaaate needles. So we went all out, I got gassed, then novicaned(not sure why, it numbed my fingertips) then put under. So starts the lessons we learned. Lesson 1) I'm allergic to anesthesia. When I came out of it they sat me up and put me in a chair. Unless they asked me a direct question I could not respond. So every minute or so, while they waited for my mother to come get me, a nurse would stick her head in and ask if I was okay. I'd mentally scramble around and do a body check and answer yes. Until the last time, right after she asked I suddenly got an alert that I was NOT okay.... But she wasn't there to ask, so I couldn't say anything! My mother walked in as I was sick all over the floor. Lesson 2) Friends are great who will come and keep you entertained while you recover...but don't bother watching movies, you'll remember nothing. We watched two movies that first day, and to this day I recall one scene from each movie. Not important scenes, just random ones. Lesson 3) Vicoden is NOT my friend. It in no way stopped any of my pain, but it did help me realize what all I'd NOT eaten for the last week. But all in all it wasn't bad. I got lots of milkshakes and other foods I liked(mom felt guilty about me getting sick). And I don't have to worry about weeeeeeird teeth. ![]() __________________________________________ Nikko was here out of love for Fey. <3|What is your Quest?| beautiful art by littl3chocobo

From what I understand wisdom teeth nearly always come out, either because there's no room or because the teeth can cause infection (being weaker than other molars) then one might have an unlucky absess to deal with.
I've been told I needed min out for 10 years now. Lucky for me I was just as bad about getting my retainer removed after my braces so my bracework is all intact but my wisdom teeth have turned sideways as a result. They didn't used to be like that, I saw the original x-ray at the time. I do find I get nasty headaches now if I leave my now temporary retainer out for too long. I have a consult with an oral surgeon (not the regular wisdom teeth guy) at the end of the month because of my mangled teeth. At least I only have three, and the third one is about pea sized with only one root (have the x-ray). My dentist is recommending I get mine done at the hospital though, because of my medical history. Suits me just fine. I'd sooner a hospital than a dentist any day!

I still have my wisdom teeth at the age of 22.. I should get them removed I don't think I have room in my mouth for them but so far they've not been a issue. Though they are all four through the skin and everything I don't think they are all the way through like they should be. But the largest issue keeping me from going off and getting dental work done to them (I need some places filled as well .. being plagued with soft teeth sucks :( ) is the fact I have no insurance and there's no way in heck a jobless college student can get dental work done like that. Though I will be getting a check for living expenses from the college here eventually I might break down and see how much it'd cost then. ~cringes~
Even with brushing daily I still have teeth problems, I've been lucky that none of them are painful truth be told. D'x Aside from that I've never had good experiences with dentists... they are over priced an tend to act like they are hardly paying attention to their damn job or at least where I am at... But as a another resort if anyone else is in my boat with no insurance and little funds you can try to find a training school for dentists in your area, I was reading up on what if you can't afford dental work and that came up as a suggestion. Apparently you can get your dental work done, give some trainees some hands on experience and get out while still having a arm and a leg :) Don't worry the teacher or professional would be there to ensure they didn't destroy anything. ~really is thinking of looking into this cause paying 300 plus for dental work isn't in my budget if I want to eat.. ~ DX

@Quiet Man Cometh
My dentist refers everyone to this dental surgeon...but I still call them dentists...they're just specialized dentists :3 And I wouldn't want to go to the hospital. Knowing my shitty insurance, it wouldn't cover that. @Rose Dentists care about you here. Mainly because (probably) it's a small area and one mess up can mess you up patient wise. Especially for a dental surgeon. I hear the average cost for (I think) all four removed here is 1,600? But I don't know if this is true...because that was on the internet and a website on the internet thinks I'm a male, that has a child or two, lives with his mom, but somehow has only 2 people living in the house. All I know is, with our shitty insurance, mom paid 300 for all four of mine coming out. Prices may be different where you are and you might need someone to come with you to drive you home like I did.

sooo...this may sound bad but i have plenty of room in my mouth for my wisdom teeth hahaha~ only three have grown in(i am missing the top right it's still soft and everything) but at 22 i may still have a chance, the bottoms fill all the extra room i had but the top has just a bit extra even with them, though i had crooked teeth as a kid i pulled nearly every one out myself(yay ocd) and for the most part they are straight, not perfect but better than before by a lot(you really have to look to see it) i have no insurance and have not seen a dentist since before i was 6

My wisdom teeth are still there, they didn't take them out. they started growing when I was 13, it didn't hurt since there was enough room in my mouth to make an easy appearance.
When I had a clean up, I was 17 they told me at some point they need to be taken out for reason of they are harder to care of and they rot away. I told them that I can't because if all four of my wisdom teeth get removed then my teeth has a lot of room to move around then it would cost thousands of dollars in oral surgery. And I haven't been to a dentist since.

Not sure how that works, Echo. Wisdom teeth can be a problem since I hear they are softer and more prone to rot since the enamel isn't strong.
I know that here one can go get dental work done at a dental school for cheap, or relatively cheap. Lots of my relatives do it who don't have major work that needs doing. Rose, brushing twice, flossing once seems to do it for me in terms of teeth care. Apparently plaque needs to be on your teeth for 24 hours before it starts doing damage, and don't brush your teeth after eating or drinking anything acidic. Acidic foods cause the enamel on your teeth to loosen and brushing can brush it off. Drinking lots of pop does a number on your teeth too. A friend of mine used to drink 2 liters of coke a day almost, and his teeth are really bad now. He can't afford to fix them. I'm in Canada, but dental isn't part of universal health care so I may end up with a nasty bill, but if any potential problems are directly related to personal health than I might get some of it covered.

Well, mine are officially gone now. All three of them! And appart from being bloody and drooly for a day, things are pretty good. My face is still somewhat funny looking like a have the mumphs but the pain is not bad (maybe because of the narcotics I'm taking, I'm sure) and a liquid diet isn't as annoying as it sounds. Tea, water, soup, pudding, and the occasional meal suppliment. No biggie.
There was a small piece of root left in one hole that the surgeon didn't want to go fishing for so that's still there but he figured it shouldn't cause any issues. Just made sure I put a towel on anything I lay down on to avoid bloody drool on things. Blah.

Mine are still there, I went to the dentist yesterday to talk about and figuring out what's wrong with my lower left canine because I'm getting a tooth ache there and then the pain spreaded to my jaw joint.
Had a thousand x-rays done and a half an hour later, they said that their nothing wrong with that tooth; they said I had what they called "Phantom Toothache" (which is when your nerves say there's something wrong when it's physically not there), but for some reason all 4 of my wisdom teeth has to be removed because they said that it was a deep cavity (which is bullshit because I see no cavities on any of my wisdom teeth and they don't hurt). So next week when my mom goes to the dentist, we're asking for those x-rays because we never saw them. And taking out my wisdom teeth would pull in extra dollars for them (even when it's not necessary). If there is nothing wrong with any of the wisdom teeth we have the right to say "don't touch them, their perfectly fine." I had my wisdom teeth since I was 13 and it didn't hurt growing in since I had enough room in my mouth to grow in easily.

Depends on your situation I guess. While I had my retainers in from braces my teeth were fine but more recently I've been getting pains in my jaw which we've decided is from my wisdom teeth. Haven't had the issue so far and I haven't been wearing my temporary retainer either. Wisdeom teeth can be a problem since they are weaker than other teeth but yeah, it's always the person's call. My sister had hers out in her teens and one of my friends has his out in his 30s.

I heard that it is more likely to cause problems the longer you wait since the roots will be more developed and all. So it'll make the surgery more difficult and so on and on.
Though I dunno for sure.

I still remember when a good part of my wisdom teeth came; three of them erupted through the gums at school. At once. This alone convinced me that wisdom teeth were evil, evil things out to destroy the world, or at the very least, make me hurt. I would have laughed at them as they were removed, but I was put under during the operation, and I didn't get the chance to gloat in victory; the little buggers were whisked away before I woke up.
