So. Apparently wearing a black pair of jeans that have a small hole in one leg, a casual sweater, and a red sox jacket over the sweater while staring at fabrics in Joann Fabrics with kind of a blank look makes other customers think you're an employee there. A random woman walked right into the store with a cart and just pulls up beside where I was standing and just flat out asks, "What time do you close?" (doesn't even stop to ask, "Do you work here?" first). I just looked at her with the same blank stare I had on and said, "I don't work here" and proceeded to ignore her. XD

Her excuse was, "Oh, you looked like you were sorting fabrics". But like I said, I ignored her / didn't respond further to anything she said. But in my head I was thinking, "So you think employees are allowed to wear worn out jeans and hoodie jackets as their work clothes?"

Tell me your encounters in any store you've been in where this has happened to you or you've seen it happen to someone else.
I really need to stop disappearing from this site.
It feels like I don't know anybody anymore.

wonderful & strange

Things like that usually happen to me when I go to beauty supply stores, places like Hot Topic/Spencers etc. or tattoo and body modification parlors.

If -and only if- I know the answer to the question they are asking, I'll help them out. If not, I'll usually let them know and point them in the right direction.

were thought to be insane
by those who couldn't hear the music."

I get asked that occasionally but I don't let it bother me. Generally people are just frustrated looking for sales people but they should think before they ask and make sure to be polite about it. At least it is better than being followed around by employees who think you are going to shoplift. I have had that happen in my younger days. I confront that behavior though. However, it has not happened in years...that I have noticed.
I used to have a sig. Really.

I had something similar happen to me once in Walmart! Of course, I had just come from a quizbowl competition and forgot to take off my nametag... but I was wearing bright green and pink, which is not even close to following the Walmart dress code.

It would be kind of fun to pretend to be an employee when that happens. Haha.

This happens a lot of times when I go to craft stores, whether it is because I look like I'm looking for something in such a way that I seem like an employee. I also have a bit of OCD, so if I see things facing the wrong way or in the wrong place I tend to fix it so I'm sure people see this and believe I'm an employee. I don't really think it's all that much of a problem though, doesn't bother me one bit. xD
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to...

Everytime I am in Kohl's, ladies ask me what the prices on things are, where departments are, locations of price scanners...

And like, I'll be texting on my phone while obviously looking through things. Very so much not doing work ethical type things.

Happens to me all the time in clothing stores in the Mall.
If I'm in a good mood I'll usually point them to the actual worker.

Sometimes though, I'm evil and give them bogus answers. xD

I've never had someone ask if I worked in a store, but when I worked at Halloween City and we dressed in costume, people would still ask me if I worked there.

This has only happened to me on one occasion, and it was by a much much older woman who apparently can't see very well. I hardly ever wear clothing that could possibly make me look like an employee, but when I'm in a store, I always move with purpose. Rarely do I stop and look at other items or even slow just to greet others.

The one time, however, I had been dressed for a meeting of sorts and so was dressed professionally. I took pity on the older woman and helped her the best I could, but mostly pointed her to one employee I'd recently passed.

Happened to me once at a small local shop, someone thought I worked there and asked where something was. Fortunately I did know where everything in the store was and how much most of it cost and even what the owners were like (I go to the place often to chat with my friend who works there). I was too bashful to tell the lady I didn't work there and I answered all her questions and showed her around before returning to my own browsing.

.....She seemed like such a nice lady I didn't have the heart to turn her away and I didn't know how to tell her I wasn't an employee without coming off as rude since I did know where everything was. >///>

Wow I've never had this happen to me actually. I'm in Walmart plenty even when I'm not working and still nada. Thank goodness too I don't think I'd be particularly pleasant on my day off about it. If it's a simple "Where is ___" question sure. But any more than that and I'm more likely to rudely brush them off... ;>-> Seriously when I go grocery shopping I'm a man on a mission who cannot afford distractions. My brother went shopping me once he couldn't keep up xD

I used to work at Ace Hardware, which has a dress code of a red shirt, and black jeans (for those of you not in the know).

My mother and I (we worked together at the time) went to Walmart, and this guy asked us where something was. I mean... I guess it might've been the fact that we were both wearing the exact same thing, but still... our colors were WAY off from Walmart's. ><

I don't see how two people wearing the same thing is an excuse. XD You're wearing RED, which is not the Walmart dress code, lol. It's blue.

Be afraid.
There's this big hardware chain over here and they wear red polos and jeans as their uniform. Never go there on a saturday with a red shirt on, I learned the hard way xD
