☪ஐﻬ☽ Well I'm here to talk to everyone about myths, legends,
folklore and the lot. I just finsihed reading
Bulfinch's Mythology and I'm reading Greeks
Stories and Legends.

I'm a huge lover of mythology. I will read any
book on mythology if I can get my hands on it.
It all started when I was in my preteens. My
aunt came over to my grandparents house with her
new doberman pincher and I wanted to know what
he name meant. It was Nika. I looked it up and
found Nike instead, a goddess, then I looked up
her other dogs name, Alea. I didn't find anything
about her. But looking up Nika's name started me
on my love and quest of mythology and it all
spirialed out of control after that.

So I'm wondering if anyone here has their favorite
myth, legend, folk tale, or what have you. Lets
discuss the joys of these things hehe.

gethnede (forgive the bad spelling) have you heard of it? he was a boy so beautiful the god zeus stole him into olimpus to be the bearer of the cup and his lover, in older versions he was either given to posiden or was posiden's lover, the story actually a way to chart consolations in the summer sky but the story is lovely enough all the same in most versions though when the age is between puberty and 20 or so it really depends on the version hahaha

it's a very well documented one with oodles of books and shrines for it, though zeus liked to snatch up pretty young things all the time so i cannot say for sure it's the same story

☪ஐﻬ☽ My favorite myths are norse ones. Loki is so awesome
hehe. I'm trying to hurry up and read this
book and 2 David Eddings' books to get a
couple new ones before my husband goes out
again for his work. I wanna try to find a
different myth book, norse preferably of
course.

☪ஐﻬ☽ Haha. I plan on buying the huge ass books of
Homer's Oddessy and The Illiad. They are
both $8 each at Barnes & Noble here and
I wanted to read them and now that I know
that they are easily accessible from B&Ns
own book release, I can't wait to get them.
I did have Bulfinch's Mythology before, years
and years ago but I never finished it and
got rid of the book. It was the first release
of the book and it was in hardcover LOL.

☪ஐﻬ☽ I'm actually glad I read Bulfinch's Mythology at my
age now. I can understand the words alot
better and with the old style speaking, I
know what people are saying now than I did
when I was in my late teens. Plus I even
was able to appreciate the english legends.
Back then I probably wouldn't of read
them.

Ganemede is an alternate name for the cupbearer of the gods, the boy whom Zeus ran off with.

I like myths but I really don't know a whole lot about them in terms of their cultural surroundings. I know the basics of a few, popular stories etc. from Greek or Norse myth and legend, but there are probably many versions and details vary depending on the age range of the target audience. I've read two different versions of The Iliad and heard of varying details from The Oddessey and they change a lot.

I've read texts on Religion but not specifically myth. Depending on which culture one is talking about though, it gets hard to separate the two.

I tend to like Celtic myths myself, probably because my roots are there as well as Northern Europe so Norse is interesting too. I tend to like individual stories though. There isn't any one culture of myths that like to the exclusion of all others.

☪ஐﻬ☽ I noticed that the difference in details with
myths was depending on when the author
wrote their piece on the myth. That was
mentioned in the book I just read. That
Homer and another person's version of
the Odessey was because of the time that
both men lived which caused differences in
the story. I prefer Homer's version of
things more, but that might be because I
read his stuff more than anyone else's.
He is more quoted than anyone else.

It's not so much different authors but different versions of the same myth. I didn't know there were any other versions of the story of Oddyseus' return to Ithaca after the Trojan war, but I've seen several of Homer's Oddyssey, and each have been editted and tweaked to match different audiences I'm sure, whether it's age range or whether something is intended to be meant for entertainment or academic discourse.

writing machine in bad repair
I've always had great affection for Celtic mythology. When I was about fifteen I started writing a story based entirely around the faeries of Celtic mythology - the kind that don't look like Tinkerbell, and probably killed some people - and from there, I just started reading whatever I got my hands on. It really sparked my interest in mythology in general.

Recently, though, I've been trying to find stuff on folk tales more than grand, epic mythological legends.
