Pretty much that's a good way to sum it up. I won't be able to do anything that requires special training, but say the gunner becomes incapacitated I can take over for him, or the driver, or be another rifle on target, machine gun, etc. It's mainly for deployments, but I also need to know how to handle riots as well, and lots of other stuff as well. Next summer will be interesting for me suffice to say.

I've been gone on vacation for a while and I was expecting it to be over by the time I got back

They are letting the event go a little bit longer for most users.

My understanding is they are trying to give users enough time to get ribbons for at least a full set.

We want to give EVERYONE a chance to at least collect one complete set of the event items.

As has been said before several users still don't have that many ribbons, even ones that post a decent amount(including myself here). We want to give users a decent amount of time to gather enough ribbons for at least one full set. When we have an official end date we'll post it in the first post of this thread and in the title though expect it to end Friday next week(15th) at the latest. We're not going to spring it on you an hour before so don't worry about that :P
