Default Computers at Work   #1
I can't really say much because I am writting this at work, but I find it rude when people are playing games at work when the place is busy. I work at a tanning bed, meaning that we have a big lull right now and I am basically being paid to sit around and watch the shop. Though I have seen several people who have been busy as hell and sitting around with Facebook up on their computer.

I tend to agree with this, though if there is a lull, I find no problem with using the computer in order to keep yourself occupied so long as you are aware of what is happening and not completely zoned out.

I agree with this...When I was working at the Chamber of Commerce, they would leave me in charge and simply leave. On certain days, it's extremely slow so I would browse the web for hours and not have a single phone call or person come in...And had I not been online, I probably would have ended up falling asleep, but I've seen tons of people not only on facebook, but ebay, etsy, and other such sites during their busiest times...

As long as it's not busy I don't see a problem with this. And even if it is, as long as they put the customer/guest first, I still don't see a problem at all. However, once they start to pay attention to the computer more than their surroundings, that's when it could be a big problem.

Well at tanning beds I've been to...all people do is say go to room -number- and then turn the stuff on from where they're at. I think people could play games and do that at the same time. Or take a two second break to do so, but that's just ones around here.

Yours could be totally different for all I know.

We do more, like I have to do the laundry, clean the beds, and clean the shop. We also have a hair salon and I have to take calls for her and our masseuse.

I'd say it's definately rude to be on the computer when one has things to do, but when there is no immediate demand and one is required to merely be present in an area, I suppose it's not too much of a problem. I write a lot and would be on a game forum when I was taking my hour at reception but I cleared it with my boss first. Being normally a data entry and research emplpyee I couldn't do much of the business end of reception but since I was required to sit at the reception desk (on call as it were) and answer phones, I was allowed to do what I wanted at the computer because I was being paid to tend phones and front desk.

One thing to keep in mind about being on the computer is that is shows the professionalism of the employees to the minds of management. My work was pretty lax about it but they would ask that we not leave things like facebook or non work documents visible on the screen in front of customers or regional supervisors. etc.
