I enjoy a wide spectrum of lyrics, from ones that sound more like poetry to ballads (as in, telling a story) to lyrics that are rhythmically very interesting.
Still, I don't like lyrics that are too pretentious or too vapid. "Partying!" lyrics, I tend to find pretty ridiculous, as well as "I am so sad, woe is me, wah wah wah" lyrics. Lyrics are an art form, and some people get it right while others fail miserably. Examples of some of my favorite lyrics: "Poetic" Janis Ian, Tea & Sympathy "Rhythmic" The Beatles, Come Together "Ballad" Traditional (Performed by Bob Dylan), The House Carpenter ![]()

I mentioned this in the favourite line or verse thread, but I like the Lyrics to "Vetern of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult. I liked the song to begin with, and the lyrics were easy to follow and I have something of a fascination with military-esque things.

I have to admit, I do like a fair bit of country, (I tried to avoid but it grows on one like a fungus once you're exposed!). I find the lyrics amusing often enough but I haven't found any particular song that strikes a cord or anything. I like the story part though. "Who's Cheatin Who?" I like more for the lyrics than the actual song (LOTS of Alan Jackson fans up where I used to live) and "Fiddle in the Band" is one like, though I can't remember who played it. My family up north holds a yard party every year and there's a playlist of 300 specifically picked songs for it.

"Everywhere you look, you can write a book
About the trouble 'tween a woman and man, But you cannot impose; you can stick your nose Into somethin' that you don't understand. Still you wonder Who's cheatin' who, who's bein' true And who don't even care anymore? Who's doin' right by someone tonight, Who's care is parked next door?":D Best Ever: Garth Brooks "Friends in Low Places." Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots, And ruined your black-tie affaire. Last one to know, the last one to show I was the last one you thought you'd see there. And I saw the surprise, and the fear in his eyes As I took his glass of champaigne, And I toasted you, said 'Honey we may be through," But you'll never hear me complain! 'Cause I got friends in low places Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases My blues away! I'll be okay. I'm not big on social graces, Think I'll slip on down to the oasis, 'Cause I got friends in low places! Well I guess I was wrong, I just don't belong But then, I 've been there before. If everythingn is alright, I'll just say goodnight And I'll show myself to the door. I didn't mean to cause a big scene But give me an hour and then, I'll be as high as that ivory tower, That you're livin in! 'Cause I got friends in low places!... That's all off the top of my head so might not be 100% accurate there. ;). Hmm...there's that internal rhyming thing again.

That Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Ray? I only know Achey Breaky Heart and all the parodies that we made of it in elementary school. It sort of became a joke song to sing, just like in high school the class clowns were all seeing who could grow the best mullet. I wasn't around for that.

I'm a fan of songs with an underlying message that you might not necessarily get after listening to them once. A lot of My Chemical Romance songs are like that for me, and Emilie Autumn. One of my favorites is "The Art of Suicide" by Emilie - the first time listening, it made me extremely depressed because I thought that it was a straightforward song about being suicidal, but after really thinking about the lyrics I realized that she was being sardonic and driving home the point that suicide does not turn out to be as pretty and romantic as most drama queens seem to believe.

Congratulations?
Anyway, I love these lyrics, they're so honest and yet, still poetic and open to interpretation: The Lies I Sire Before it lies The story of invoking joy Endless love Given to me through a dream A following from above I couldn't help myself God walks by my side Within my limbs burns hate Believe me how I cry The tremble of my hands Blinded by my tears But I stand heroic The holy words I heed With glory and blazing eyes I rise into bloody skies Myself a storm, ravaging The wrath of God, down I bring With mercenary's smile I rise up from the shade As the king of all souls The pounding of my wings Tearing through the night Death's taking his toll The searing heat Burning eyes Fury and fire A forest gone Torn victims The lies I sire My work is done and I leave none The passion in my dying worth The grief I leave is meaningless The lies within these ancient words Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers. Between supposed brothers.

I find I tend to like the sorts of lyrics that show up a lot in power metal, like Hammerfall or Dragonforce, probably from the storytelling aspect of them. At the same time though, I'm just as likely to want to roll my eyes or groan at what comes off as either really obvious or just plain typical. I like the fantasy style references and superntural stuff, but the constant barrage of words like glory, pride, honour, blah blah blah, just start to lose meaning and feel like filler after a while.

Can't help myself. My friends were playing music today.
"Anyone with half a brain Can see the Human race has gone insane. At this point I dont know If I'll upset the status quo If I throw poison in the water main. Put your ear to everybody's heart And hear that breaking sound. Hopes and dreams are shattering appart And crashing to the ground. I cannot believe my eyes. The world's full of hate and lies. Can you see? Evil inside of me Is on the rise." Catchy ;). Courtesy of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. "Brand New Day"
