What sort of lyrics does everyone prefer in music they listen to?
Provide an example, if you can.

For me, rich, intricate, dark, and poetic. I appreciate religious or mystical themes and allusions, but really, anything that can be pondered and analyzed. Lyrics that don't get boring after you get to know a song.

For my example,

Soft Pluvia Murmurs Piano, Tales of Dark
Cold silence has a tendency
to atrophy any sense of compassion
between supposed lovers.
Between supposed brothers.

I like lyrics that sound pleasant, even if they seen silly or make little sense. What drives me nuts are songs that are written with very obvious or forced poetics. If the lyrics are complicated or intricate, I prefer the song to me minimal in design, with fewer intruments or elaborate stretches of music and what not. I guess I like something of an inverse relationshp between complexity of lyrics and complexity of music.

I like to sing too, though it's been some time since I've done anything outside of moments on my own. I gravitate towards songs that are pleasant to sing, where the lyrics make up the melody more than the intruments.

I know this doesn't particularly talk about specific words or sentences but I like it when the voice feels like an intrument itself.

Some of songs where I like the voicework would be Nightwish "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" (I love it even though I don't understand it), Triakel "En Vacker Vän" and Stone Sour "Bother," all with fairly simple instrument work.

Mm, yeah, I'm almost completely the opposite. :p

I prefer the instruments to create a poetic resonance with the lyrics and bring them to life. Of course, I can't, don't, and won't sing, so that doesn't factor into my preference. I look at music like poetry I can take in audibly.

Oh it's well and good to have complex music going on behind song, but I'd rather it be simpler so I can enjoy the intruments without trying to focus on the song. Of course, that goes away after hearing the song a few times. Simple statements like the chorus in "Carved in Stone" I really like with the more intense instumental background, expecially with the layered voices. Men's choir is something I've always liked. I went to a Welsh mens choir concert when I was in elemtary school after studyingi Wales.

Looks like we're in three different categories. I guess you could call the lyrics of the songs I listen to "depressing" or "angry"...

For example, Karakuri Burst from Vocaloid and Linkin Park lyrics...Nickelback can also be decent.

Sometimes I just go with OSTs and stuff, lyric-less XD

I still have my LP CD somewhere. I actually went to one of their concerts. The only concert I've ever been to! I like the tunes they have, but to me it does come close to 'yelling' but doens't loose the melody, which annoys me. "In The End" is one of my favourites along with "Numb". I'm not too familiar with their new stuff. I tend to ignore the rapping though. I'd say they are a band I don't listen to for lyrics but for overall sound. It' similar for me with the odd song by other bands like Static-X or Disturbed. David Draiman's voice is neat but I rarely pay too much attention to what he's actually saying.

In terms of LP's rapping....I'll take My December and In The End, and Somewhere I Belong.

The rest of the rapping/screamo is borderline for me.

I'm not that fond of "Somewhere I Belong" music-wise, but I love the critters in the video. They look like the walked out of a Dali painting.

Cause I'm strong enough to live without you
Strong enough and I quit crying
Long enough, now I'm strong enough
To know you gotta go
There's no more to say
So save your breath and walk away
No matter what I hear you say
I'm strong enough to know you gotta go

I just posted those lyrics on Facebook, so something like this. xD

You just gave me a better idea for this thread. Everyone should post examples of the sort they like.

Hmm. Tricky to think about lyrics that I like in terms of actual language since I like the as much for sound or flow. These ones I like, mostly becasue of the way the melody works the the rhyme:

HIM - "Funeral of Hearts"

"She was the sun
Shining upon
The tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail
He was the moon
Painting you
With it's glow so vulnerable and pale

...

She was the wind, carrying in
All the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget
He was the fire, restless and wild
And you were like a moth to that flame

The heretic seal beyond divine
A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind
The last rites for souls on fire
Three little words and a question why..."

I'm not big on the chorus, but I like the parts in between. I'm a big fan of internal rhyming, though having it here without the meldoy kind of messes the rhythm up.

So watching Idol with mom last night (recorded) and one guy decides to sing Journey's Don't Stop Believin', which is most cool, and the line "midnight train going anywhere" remind me of "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum. I love the song but decent recordings of it seem hard to come by. When I first started looking for it I had to search it by the lyrics because I didn't know the title (but I could guess) or the artist.

The Lord of Mushrooms
That's a good question since I like various types of music, I like the kind of songs that have this complex meaning in the lyrics they can be emo, dark, life experiences, love, heartaches, and I know one song that is close to biblical but it's made in a dark way (the Book of Revelation)

I like the types that gets you to think "What does that mean? Does it mean this or that?" Or it has a complex story that it gives you though of what it means, not the total obvious.

Fireflies- Owl City

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
Awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems

Falling Down- Oasis

The summer sun, it blows my mind
Is falling down on all that I've ever known
Time will kiss the world goodbye
Falling down on all that I've ever known
Is all that I've ever known
