Mercury Poisoning!
The man sat on lazily on the wooden bench beneath him, his eyes were closed and his head was tilted back so his face looked toward the sky. He was awake, and perfectly aware of his surroundings. He knew a street light stood above him, shining a dim light onto his face. He also knew it wasn't quite necessary since it wasn't dark enough to be considered late. He knew that as it got later fewer and fewer people walked by, anxious to be inside their homes before dark. His senses, heightened by years of training and special supplements given to him allowed him to practically sense their nervousness at the setting sun. They had good reason to fear. At night these street were haunted by the most vicious animal of all. Vampires.

Opening his eyes the man looked around. Despite the late hour he was awaiting the arrival of his best friend. He eyes scanned the crowd, sure he'd see her the moment she gotten anywhere within his sight range. He brushed hair from his face and squinted into the light of the street lamp. Blasted thing, his night vision was better than most so at this time of day it was more of a hindrance than a help.

Artemis let out a frantic sigh, hurrying down the street. While she could easily drop the two creeps at her tail, she had an image to keep up. After all, a petite woman of 5'4" could not normally beat two 6'+ men to the ground. She pushed her glasses up, as they had slid, then glanced behind her. She groaned, moving her hand so her hair didn't cover her eyes as she moved. They were closing in. She wouldn't run, not yet.

With the sun slowly setting, not many people were out that could help, and even those who were around didn't seem to notice her in her frantic daze. Ah well, if worse came to worse before she got to William, she would lead them back into an ally and snap their necks.

Humans as a whole were greatly unaware of the danger that lurked around the night. Vampires, of course. Now, there were no where near as many vampires as there were humans, but that was how things worked. If there were too many vampires, the humans would end up disappearing all together unable to supply their needs.

While quite a few vampires cursed their immortal, blood sucking lives; Artemis embraced hers. It had gotten her through many sticky situations in this dangerous human world. She remembered way back when when humans were so much gentler. You could leave your door unlocked, and even allow your kids out at night. Nowadays, you only did that if you had a death wish or wanted to kill your child without anyone knowing it was you.

The largest downside to the human's added aggression, was that it made most vampires equally aggressive. This posed many problems, and now, few well trained humans were placed in almost every city to hunt her and her kind. Thankfully for her, the two men chasing her now were not Slayers. Just poor dumb asses thinking they can have a bit of fun tonight.

She quickly looked back to where she was going, her eyes scanning the street many feet before she was ready to cross it. She could already see William, just about 30 yards away. Now she began to run. She bolted across the street, but did not notice the little black sports car speeding down the street.

"Holy shit!" She quickly bent her knees, jumping forward as she heard it approaching. She just barely skirted over the hood, her little black shoes gently rubbing on it's hood. She landed safely on the other side of the car, hurrying over to William.

While she was posing as a human, she was well known for her little antics around school, and knew William would barely note her jumping a car hood. Now he was only a few yards away and the men were bolting across the street after the car had sped away, the driver unsure of what happened but decided to not stick around.

"William!" She quickly pulled him from the bench, seeing his eyes were closed. She knew he was awake, but yanked him up anyway then hid behind him, pointing to the two men that were now standing about 5 yards away. It was apparent one had a gun, the other a knife. "I hope you can fight..at least a bit?"

William had known of her approach before she had reached him, and had known that her steps had been frantic, but he had simply assumed she was in a hurry to see him. He frowned at his own negligence. "Artemis." He murmured in a quite greeting, though his mind wasn't all that focus on her, but it was trained on the men who threatened her.

He half-turned, now standing in a protective stance. He gave her shoulder a quick squeeze, before releasing her and quietly saying, "Get in the nearest building. Don't worry, I can handle myself in a fight rather well." He smiled, though their was no happiness to it. He was examining his enemies. They would be nothing compared to his skill, though the gun could prove a problem if he wasn't careful.

Glancing back at Artemis he diecided it would be better to solve this without violence if he could, so instead of walking over and beating them to a pulp he said in dangerous sounding voice, "You picked the wrong girl to try this with. Leave. Before you get yourself hurt." He stared at them with a hard gaze, watching for their reactions.

Artemis quickly stepped away with a nod, peering around. Most buildings were either houses, or abandoned and locked regardless. She did, however, spot a small convince store near by. She would dearly love to beat those two humans within an inch of their lives, but she wouldn't dare do so in front of Will. She let out a quiet, defeated sigh and hurried along, being careful to listen for the tell tale sound of the gun being cocked.

Sure enough, it came as soon as she got far enough from William. The man holding the gun raised it, aiming it at her, "Hold it! I never said you could leave."

Artemis looked back, irritated, but not showing it, she had a bunch of retorts she would love to use, but decided it was best she didn't. After all, she could survive a bullet to the heart, or even the head, but William, not so much. She quickly stopped, closing her eyes in frustration. Once William would end up tackling the man, she'd run; or if he managed to solve this without violence, then she'd be in a prime location to meet up with him.

The man with the knife stepped forward, his eyes on William, "Boy, you have no idea what you're just gotten yourself into. You would've been better off letting us take your little girlfriend."

"Hey! I'm no--"

"Shut up you stupid girl! I didn't say you could talk!" The man with the gun had yelled, aiming it back at William, finger hovering over the trigger. "Now then, you can either walk away, or I can kill you right here."

William sighed, annoyed. These men were fools, but they were fools with a gun, and he doubted very much that Artemis could dodge a bullet. His face remained blank, though he was relieved when both weapons were once again pointed at him. "Does this mean I can't convince you to back down? Disappointing. Though if that's how you prefer it then so be it." He said in bored sounding tone. He had plenty of throwing knives on him, taking these men out would be no problem except that his skills with weaponry might be suspicious to Artemis. She knew he could fight well enough to hold his own, even knew that he had some skill with knives, but she didn't know the extent of those skills.

Will supposed he could give them another chance to leave, but he didn't really want to. They had threatened his friend, and for that they would feel his wrath. First thing was first, the gun had to be disposed of.

Quickly, William ducked down, avoiding the shot the would most likely be fired at him for moving, though if one was fired he didn't hear it, he was too concentrated on his task. Swiftly he sprang back up and rushed the gunman. He took hold of his wrist, holding it at a painful angle. He could snap it if he wanted.

The man let two rounds rip through the air. The first cause the boy moved, the second from surprise as the stranger grabbed onto his wrist and twisted it. He was forced to drop the gun after the shot, as it was very awkward and painful angle. He narrowed his eyes and brought his fist to the boy's abdomen.

The other man jumped back a bit as the boy was slowly driving his partner to the ground. He noticed the gun on the floor, picking it up and holding the warm barrel to his temple, "I suggest you let go, boy."

Artemis let out a slightly pained squeak as the random bullet hit her arm and sent her to her knees from surprise. She hopped William didn't hear, but doubted that was the case. It was fairly quiet around here. She had been shot at many times before, but it still burned for a brief moment every time. She held her hand over the wound while it quickly closed. She frowned, gently lifting the torn edge, "And this was new.." She sighed looking up at William just as the other man put the gun to his head.

Her heightened sight could see that he was just millimeters away from sending a bullet through William's skull. She had two options: save Will and possibly reveal her secret, or let him get shot then tear the humans apart. If her heart was beating, it would be racing along with her mind.

She bit her lip, putting her hands to the ground as she moved to her feet, ready to pounce. She launched forward, and within a fraction of a second, she was next to the man with the gun and knife, her slim fingers clasping around his wrist, her other hand on the gun. She twisted his wrist back, ripping the gun from his hand and pointing it at his forehead, her eyes had become red, glowing slightly.

William's abdomen clenched as the man's fist hit him. It was hard, and he could feel that it was painful, but the pain did not effect his movements. Swiftly he returned the punch with one to the now gun-less man's jaw. It sent him down, but now William faced a new problem.

Not only had he heard a pained squeak come from Artemis's direction, which could not bode well, but the other man had taken the gun and now pointed it at him. He was beginning to hate guns. Suddenly, before William could draw his throwing knife to quickly take out the man, Artemis had arrived without the slightest warning.

Her movements made no sense to him, they were to fast and unnatural, but at the moment she was his friend and they were his enemies. Who to trust was obvious. So without a thought he drew a knife that looked as if it could belong to any man who wished to protect himself on the street and picked up the man he had knocked down, holding the knife to his throat. He gazed over at Artemis, unsure as to what they would do next. "To kill or not to kill, that is the question." He murmured quietly to the man. It was poor question to him. He wanted to kill.

Artemis was a bit nervous when she felt William's eyes on her. She bit her lip, keeping her eyes focused on the man before her, "As much as I would love to kill you...I'm not really the killing type..." She flipped the gun, grabbing the barrel and swatting the man on the back of the head with the butt, "..but I'll happily beat him senseless." Of course, she heard William, and was mildly disturbed, but she didn't let him know that.

She quickly calmed herself though, her eyes returning to their classic brown-red color. She looked back to the man that William had detained, "What about him?" She quickly threw the gun aside, appearing a bit worried as she watched it.

William had pressed the knife to the man's throat, not enough to hurt him or draw blood, but enough so the man definitely knew that he held his life in his hands. He was contemplating actually killing the man when Artemis's words snapped him out of it. To her killing was wrong, and even though they had attacked them he doubted she wouldn't understand his need to kill them when they were harmless. So instead he removed the knife and hit the man in the head with it's hilt, making him lose consciousness.

William looked over at Artemis, gazing at her for a long moment before the events of the battle sunk in. The most important even being that she had been shot. Without a second thought he put away the knife and looked at her anxiously. "You were shot... but you have no wound... I could have sworn..." He shook his head. "Didn't know you could fight so well." He said in a curious voice. He had to be imagining things. Surely she hadn't moved as fast as he had thought she did.

She jumped a bit, pulling her arm away and placing her hand over the torn area of her sleeve, "It..just barely missed. I was just surprised.." She chewed on the inside of her cheek with a slight smile, "It was the adrenaline..you know how that is." She smiled weakly, hoping he wouldn't address the matter anymore. "So..we still on for the movie?"

Artemis was a bit nervous, but if worse came to worse, she could block the memory from his mind. She had plenty of practice doing that the past few years. "I'm alright..really. Are you okay?"

William frowned. Something about the entire event seemed... off to him. "I'm fine." He blew out puff of air, blowing hair from his face. The entire event had him feeling wrong, as if there was something he should see, but didn't.

Suddenly he moved forward and pulled her in a tight hug. He let go just as quickly and stepped back. "You should take better care. No more walking alone at night for you." He told her smiling a little, to show her he was mostly kidding. "Yeah, I'd still like to go, if you're up for it. If not I'll take you home."

She smiled a bit, laughing softly, "Well, then I guess I'll just need a body guard. Now, who could ever live up to that title?" She stood on his left, so her torn sleeve wouldn't be in his direct line of view. After all, a torn sleeve did not indicate a miss when it was almost dead center in her arm.

She took his hand, eagerly leading him along to the theater, "Are you kidding? I've been waiting weeks to see this movie. I'm not going to let two dumb asses ruin our night! Come on, we might still make the previews!" She smiled brightly, dragging him along.

William laughed, allowing himself to be dragged along. "I'd be more than willing to be your bodyguard..." He began, sounding very much like a loyal friend. Then his expression become a teasing one. "For the right price of course. I'm not cheap." He grinned and gave her hand a light squeeze. He enjoyed holding her hand, very much so, but he didn't let himself think about that. Those kind of things were off limits when it came to Artemis. Because he cared about her he could not be more involved with her than he already was.

He looked ahead of them, seeing the movie theater come into view. He was pretty sure nothing would stop Artemis from doing something she wanted to do. Not even men with a gun. His mouth turned down slightly. He hadn't gotten to finish off those men and this disturbed him. Slayer rule number one: Never leave them alive. These men were not vampires, but William still felt the rule applied.
