Johnny - I was watching Cats 101 and they were talking about the japanese bobtail, and then they started saying how it inspired hello kitty and how hello kitty inspired maneki neko.. and they were saying it wrong, and didn't even tell the historical event on WHY maneki neko is a huge icon! (Loves the story of how a japanese bobtail saved a man from a tree falling down on him by "beconing" him over to the spot it was at. I heard 2 versions one was a cave another was a temple so.. yea :x

I have a Maneki Neko plastic statue, put batteries in it and its left paw waves. :3

I think you heard the TV backwards. On the show they say "Hello Kitty has roots in maneki neko," not the other way around.

Also, there are several stories of what the cat saved the man from (and even several different men, too - sometimes he's just a man, sometimes he's an emperor or a prince or an important temple figure of some kind). I've heard the story told as a tree, a rock, or a bolt of lightning.

Yes, DO NOT DOUBT MY KNOWLEDGE OF USELESS TRIVIA! Seriously, like two or three months ago I was looking up the exact definition/origin of "anonymous" in my Mac's built-in dictionary and "anon" showed up so I clicked on it out of curiosity and POOF! Learned something new.

Maybe I did hear it backwards but they were still pronouncing it wrong :x and thats what I was concentrating on D=

I read the story where it was a wondering merchant and it was raining real bad he couldn't see so far in any direction, so he rested under the tree, He see's the cat "waving" at him, he follows it and lighting hit the tree causing it to fall over in the spot he was sitting.

I love that story x3 I also like the one where the cat was supposedly attacking its owner and then they later find out it was attacking the evil spirit haunting the woman xD
