This sounds a lot like the D&D party I used to play in about ten years ago:

You walk past a couple humans, a goblin, a Firbolg, a Tiefling, and a Half-Orc, all researching something... And you steal 3 lost books from the book cart!

eta: 4 books rebound. Good as new!

lol it was a Critical Role reference.

ETA: By the number of sticky-notes, it's a safe bet these 2 books were used in book reviews.
