Totally get not even wanting to say "I'm okay" when someone wants to make small talk. But then they may not understand the small victories of things like, "I brushed my teeth today!"

Do it like me, don't answer, just reply immediately with 'how are you?' if you keep asking, you don't have to answer

My default answer to how are you has become "I'm here." since I don't like lying and saying I'm fine or good, and I also feel awkward about telling people I am miserable.

I sometimes use that line, but for complete strangers it can be awkward because they already have the "Good!" reply loaded up.
