Snaaaaake! | #1 | |
It's a snake!
So, fun Derpy adventure could have taken a turn for the worse. But thankfully didn't. So a friend and I decided to go on a small sort of mini hiking adventure in an area near town and one of the people who works in the area warned us that rattlesnakes are commonly found and have been spotted out and about, but I didn't think much of ut because in all my years, I have never ywt actually seen one. So we're on a kind of short cliff and I go to step closer to the ledge to maybe pose Derpy for a picture and I hear a strange noise. I start to take another step forward to see what animal is down below making such a strange noise when I suddenly realized that the noise I was hearing was a rattlesnake! I slowly backed away and everyone lived. The end. Now, have a couple snake pictures! (It was coiled under a small ledge, so I couldn't get any really great pics of it.) ![]() ![]() ![]()

I've heard rattlesnakes are evolving to no longer have their rattle since the ones that have it are being removed from the gene pool.
I've found 3 venomous snakes and 1 non so far in the back yard just this past month. I have to look for them before letting the dogs out every time. Have had too many close calls and one did get bit a couple of years ago.

But will they still be rattlesnakes then if they don't rattle? XD
Thankfully where I live there aren't too many venomous snakes (mainly just rattlesnakes) and they're not super frequent. This was my only actual spotting of one in the wild and I've lived here all (almost) 30 years of my life. Those doggos are lucky to have such an attentive person caring for them! Hopefully the one that was bitten recovered well. Also, snake pics have been added to first post. ![]()

Maybe call them rattlessnakess? I don't think I've seen that pattern before, what region if I may ask?
She did survive the bite, it took anti-venom among other things. It was frustrating because I checked around just as much before but she had to go nosing inside a bush. But later wound up getting an incurable cancer, so can't say she's still around.

I'm in the Northwestern U.S. (central Montana specifically.) Based on mild amounts of research, I think it's a prairie rattlesnake.
Edit: Further research has given me some fun statistics. There are only 10 species of snake native to Montana. The prairie rattlesnake is the only one of these species that is venomous. ![]()

Pretty Rattlebaby. yay for everything turning out well for everyone in the encounter and yay for just leaving it be. Sneks only attack if provoked, and Rattlebabies give a warning before striking. They were here first, so trying to kill them is not only mean, it takes a predator out of the environment, which means the prey animals have more of a chance to reproduce, and become problem critters themselves.
I use She/Her and They/Them pronouns.

Well, most trips depend on my time off from work (basically 1 day per month if I'm lucky) and friends with cars. So usually just short trips near town. But I'll see what we can manage this summer. Maybe not moose, but we might be able to befriend some deer and antelope. Maybe some geese, ducks, and swans too.
