She read the screen and frowned "Well I'm sure it was better than a PB&J." she said over a mouthful of peanut butter. She took a sip of milk. "I mean peanut butter was created in 1895, so you'd of been pretty old to try it even if you didn't get murdered. If you were 22 in 1846, you'd of been 71 back when it was invented. Then provided you got to get a hold of some back then. It was originally for poor people, and if you were the son of a banker, no real reason for you to have it. But it just creamy peanuts. If you've had a peanut there's no real difference in taste, just texture really." she explained.

(( and yes that's the real invention date of peanut butter. I looked it up lol))

((Bahaha, I looked it up for my last post too because I was curious to see if that was something he would have even heard of. xD))

Benjamin laughed again, sorry that they couldn't have an actual conversation. Granted, this was a conversation of sorts. They were communicating through a medium that he would have never expected, but she couldn't see him and he felt as though some of the feeling he would have liked to convey got lost through the cold text that appeared on the screen. Perhaps the following day he'd be able to muster up enough energy. Perhaps if he made it a point to sit by the window all day they could have an extended conversation. He might even be able to speak. For the time being, however, he typed:
No, I suppose there wouldn't have been. Our cook was very good and more than likely wouldn't let us eat anything that the lower classes would eat. Kind of silly, isn't it?

(lol)

She chuckled "Yeah I guess it would be. I'm sure throughout all the people who came and gone from the house, there have to be more foods that you'd like to try. This house has been in my family after yours moved away. Many generations of different foods." she chuckled as she finished the first half of her sandwich and moved on to the second half. She took another sip of milk. "I honestly think it'd be interesting to try the kind of food that you ate back then. I mean we probably have quicker and less savory versions of whatever but I mean something that was cooked for hours and then served on fancy plates."

Benjamin placed one of his ankles over his knee turning slightly so he was facing April; efforts that would go unnoticed but nonetheless made it feel more real for him. He said nothing for a moment, deciding to give her a moment to eat her food.I should think you wouldn't; it was very different from anything you eat today. Would you like to know what I spread on my bread instead of peanut butter and jam?

She shook her head "What did you spread on your bread?" she asked as she finished up the last of her sandwich and then finished her milk. She waited, watching the screen for his response.

Benjamin laughed and squared his shoulders as he typed the response, ready to gauge April's reaction.

My absolute favourite thing was a spread called Gentlemen's Relish. Have you heard of it?

She looked at the response and tilted her head. "Gentleman's Relish? To I want to know is the question. It seems very um...odd sounding." she commented. "It sounds like a euphemism forum....something very naughty"

(( and I looked it up and ew...and the urban dictionary....ew...))

(((NOOOT THE URBAN DICTIONARY ONE. I WAS UNAWARE THAT IT MEANT THAT ALSO APPARENTLY NOW. I mean, the actual recipe sounds gross to me too, but he's not referring to sperm! He doesn't eat sperm! xD)))

Benjamin tilted his head, wondering how he could have possibly said anything naughty. If there was a euphanism there, it went right over his head. Naughty? How so? It's a spread that contains a variety of spices...and anchovies. The flavour is quite robust. It's one of those things that you either love or hate. He was still wearing an expression of pure amusement and hoped it came through in his words. They seemed cold sitting there on the screen like that.

She looked up the name of the stuff on her phone just to see if people still eat it. She saw some advertisements for the relish, so it was still a food product today. She also saw the Urban Dictionary entry for it. "Oh ew! I knew it had to of had a naughty meaning too. Now that stands for, um..." she sat there trying to figure out how to word it for someone like Ben. "Well the stuff guys put out, to make babies..." she said scrunching up her nose.

Benjamin looked over her shoulder at the phone see the advertisements and nodded. That was it. But out of a can? Prepackaged in factories? He was used to his homemade, but he supposed the world had changed quite a bit since he was a part of it. He continued looking as she pulled up a page on her phone titled Urban Dictionary. If he wasn't a ghost right there, he would have paled and backed away so his chill didn't affect the woman too much.

Well, I certainly didn't spread any of THAT on my bread. I can tell you that much.

"Thank goodness," she said after a moment. "Yeah I supposed a lot of your old sayings, customs and other vernacular has a much different meaning then they did in your time. It comes with the times I guess. Things that are outdated get a fresh brand and what not. Some for the better, some for worse." she shrugged. "I guess they figure since nobody from that time is alive anymore, nobody is gonna say anything about it." She stood from the counter and put her plate in the sink. "I should get some sleep. I'll go out and put in more job applications in the morning," she said and yawned.

She then went to her laptop and brought up something different on the screen. "Since you can't move heavy things that well, I called up an old novel up on my computer. Just use this key to scroll down." she said showing him the down and up arrows. "the whole story is on here so you can read it at your leisure. Goodnight Ben." she said and then headed upstairs.

Benjamin sighed, not liking the pause before her affirmation as if that was something a gentleman like him would do. All of that aside, he was as far as far could be from a sexual deviant. He'd upheld Christian beliefs having been raised in a Protestant household and had been saving himself for marriage. After a moment he typed, Evidently, this was one of those things for the worse. Have you heard of this ehm...more negative meaning of the word? He was disappointed when April told him that she needed sleep, but she was still in the land of the living and had needs that she needed to adhere to. Benjamin understood that.

He glided over to the screen to see what she was pulling up and blinked at her, marveling at the fact that she would be so keen to cure his boredom even when she wasn't there.Lor! This is thoughtful. Thank you so much!
((Did you have any preference as to what the novel was? From his time or modern?))

((I think she'd try to find something close to his time frame or close to it. Maybe like Wizard of Oz or something lol))

April left the kitchen for the upstairs and went to her room. Sadly she didn't get her bed put together yet, so she would have to just sleep on the mattress with her sleeping bag. Tomorrow for sure she would get it put together and made so she could actually sleep IN bed instead of in a sleeping bag.

She would settle down and go to sleep pretty quickly. Even besides the excitement of talking with Ben, she was exhausted and fell asleep pretty fast. She had interesting dreams of Ben, him being alive and not a ghost. It was kind of a romantic dream. He was courting her in the way they did in the 1800s.

She woke up the next morning and yawned. She stretched and went down to the kitchen to make a bowl of cereal. She looked at the computer to see how far Ben read. "If you're here Ben I'm saving your progress on your story and bringing up the typing prompt." she said as she brought up the blank Word Perfect document and waited for him to say something.

Over the course of the evening, Benjamin had made a lot of progress. On top of being quite literate and quite educated, in his life Benjamin was an avid reader. The Wizard of Oz was much, much easier than what he'd accustomed himself to, veering more towards Eliot or Dickens (occasionally dabbling with the Romantics like Wordsworth or Blake when he was in a poetic kind of mood) than Baum so it was new literature to him which suit him just fine. Having nothing else to do over the course of the night he'd gotten halfway through as it was. One thing was certain, he'd never paid American literature of his time any attention, and he wished he would have.

When she moved over to the computer from the window he sat perched at since the sun rose, and watched how she opened each of the programs so that he could mimic it later if need be. Thank you for pulling up a book for me to read! This is so much easier than attempting to move the books in the study. Baum deserves more credit than I gave him.

"The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorites." she said. "My mother would read it to me when I was a kid. There's many other stories in this universe, I can bring them up once you finish with that one." she offered and then grabbed a bowl from the cupboard and then poured some Lucky Charms into it before pouring in milk and adding a spoon. "So how far did you get in the story?" she asked over a mouthful of cereal.

Ah, a children's book. That made sense. When Benjamin was a child, his parents read to him as well, and this reminded him greatly of some of the things that he'd heard audibly, but as for his own reading he tended to focus on works that were more...pointed. He took his seat by the computer and wrote down:

A little over halfway, if the percentages are to be believed. It worked as the perfect cure to the boredom that's been plaguing me for the past few decades or so. There was a small pause as Benjamin seemed to be gathering a bit more energy. When the sun rose, however, I moved my position to near the window so I stopped reading a few hours ago.
