Birthday money? You're funny!
I usually get 1-2 presents from friends and that's it. No money. Christmas is essentially the same. I get 1-2 presents from friends, my brother usually gives me something lame that I don't want or need and that's it. ![]()

for the past 2 years, we've done 'Secret Santa' for Xmas. Xmas 2015, because my older daughter (who had me) was lazy, she ordered a season of a show I watch on DVD. no money.
Xmas 2016, hubby had me, and got me a Chromebook! =) I ended up with money because I had the money I was saving to go towards a Chromebook. for this Xmas, I'm putting gift cards on my list again. =D

I can put anything I want on my list, but no one will get me anything off it anyway.
BUT the friends that sent me stuff did get me some nice cat stuff and one made me minty soap and some sugar scrub...so that was nice. ![]()

My family does a gift exchange too, though usually they agree in September or October to not give any gifts (I'm not kidding, I've got a homemade video proof of that huge bulk of presents under the tree from one of those years everyone was all "hey, let's not do gifts, everyone owns everything they need anyway and we don't have enough room for new stuff")
Most of the presents are kind of awkward though, and then you sit there and be polite to everyone nevertheless, unless maybe you are my grandpa who re-gifted the hand knitted sweater my mom once gave him to my uncle right away in front of the tree. ![]()

I make a wish list and give it to my dad, but we like trolling my stepmother with her gift. We always do a bit of a gag with it. Like one year we got her something she wanted and wrapped it up without putting a name or anything on it. When everyone had opened all the other presents, we handed that one to her, which she was complaining how we didn't give her the gift she wanted, and when she finishes opening the gift she realizes that the gift in her hand was it. Then again my stepmother is of the mind you don't give someone something for Christmas unless they are also giving you something. =.=;

Rings a bell, ml1201. I have one aunt who tallies presents by their monetary value and thinks a crap present which was expensive is always better than something cheap or homemade tailored exactly to the recipient's interests. Just because, you know, money equals love </irony>
(I'm really surprised she never married some random millionaire. Probably didn't find any.) And there's my grandma who will add stuff like duct tape, paperclips or soft tissues nicely wrapped with a bow whenever she feels the gift table is too empty.

hee, thanks mdom!
xmas 2014 was the last one where we all got something for everyone - now this was only 9 people total, so... 8 gifts? i would get or make something for my husband, 2 daughters, 2 sisters-inlaw, brother-inlaw, and my mother-inlaw. my father-inlaw, on the other hand, would get the gag gift since he rarely showed up for xmas. (still doesn't). my daughters and my one sis-inlaw (hubby's sister) would always get a TON of gifts. but there was still the 'what do i get for so-and-so?' ever year. so at a family dinner in octoberish of 2015, we decided to go for the secret santa, and that was the only person you *had* to get something for. in fact, my mother-inlaw asked my younger daughter, who was 14 at the time, if she was absolutely okay with getting only one thing that year, and she was. so a new tradition was born after like 20ish years! =D

Go go go, trystan, you can do it!
Yeah, my grandma is totes adorbs. Tiny little lady, very religious (but not forcing her beliefs onto anyone else), and she easily makes the best lasagna ever. Secret Santa sounds like a nice idea, though I don't know how that makes it easier to find a good gift. I mean, sure, you only have to think of one now instead of whatever many, but it still leaves the age old question what your folks would really enjoy? ![]()

what we do to help with the gifts is last year, i emailed everyone a short note, for everyone to 'reply all' to with your top 3-5 things that are on your list. everyone gets the list, but you only have to pay attention to your person that you got. =)
