He said he is worried about our dog, which is really our little girl ~ but she's not that old. I mean she's not a puppy, but I'm here with her! And if anything happens I would tell him right away.

Makes sense. Some dogs don't deal with change too well...especially when one of their humans are suddenly gone for a prolonged period of time. Hopefully since you are still there she will adapt well.
