What does it mean if you have a plus sign next to your name?

I think it means that they are your friends, because I only have the + sign next to the names of my friends.

It means you are friended with that person on your friendlist ^-^

It can also mean that you have requested friendship. I see the plus sign as soon as I try to add someone even if they haven't accepted yet.

when you request friendship, it adds the person to your contacts and requests for the other person to add you to theirs. our "friendship" system doesn't have to be mutual. XD so the plus basically means that they are on your contacts. you don't even have to request friendship from the other person if you don't want to.
