A good friend to talk to when things go to hell in a hand basket.
Unhappy Three little kittens   #1
Not to long ago a female cat which we named her Mama Cat gave birth to some kittens only three servide until now. Just today one of them died suddenly, I was scared and sad so I knew it was time to get the others and take them to the shelter I only can catch the runt as for the other one it was too fast to catch. So I took the runt to the shelter, I told them what happen and they said they will take care of it.
So now I'm glade that the runt is safe and hope it will have a good home with a loving family, sad that his older sibling died and the other one is not there with him.
So did you think I did the right thing or not?

Please help me on my quest if you can: http://www.trisphee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7606

If they weren't able to survive out on their own, then you definitely did the right thing. A stray cat that I haven't been able to catch has had kittens in my yard twice already. The first time she had snuck into one our sheds and had them in there and I didn't find them until they were like 2 months old so by then they were really feral and wouldn't get along with humans. I had to take them to a shelter because I couldn't afford to get them all spayed/neutered and time to tame them.

The 2nd time she had 4 kittens I found them when they were 2 weeks old and they were already hissing at me! I didn't want to take them from their mother at that point cuz they still needed milk so I kept checking up on them to try to get them used to humans. However the mother kept moving them and I could only find them like once a week. When they were about 6 weeks old, she had abandoned them. I found only 3 of them near starving to death (the last one I assume had already died because I never found it) and my gf and her brother was nice enough to take them in and feed/take care of them. They're all spayed/neutered now and somewhat tame. 2 of them still act kind of feral but not as bad as the previous litter of kittens.

So anyways, in my experience, if they're out dying, then taking them to a shelter to give them a shot at life was the right thing to do if you couldn't take care of them yourself. Leaving them unattended to go out and have more babies would have been bad.

You definitely did the right thing. This way, he gets a chance to be with a loving family and have a nice, safe home to live in. It is sad that the little thing is all by himself, but it'd be more sad if he'd been left with the others and perished.

As others have mentioned, it was the right thing. The kitten would have died most likely if left out there. For the other kitten, did you try leaving out some food for it, prehaps in a humane trap or somthing? If you wanted to try and get that one to the shelter that could work providing it still hangs around your place.

I hope you can manage to get the other kitten that got away. As for if it's the right thing. I agree with everyone else. It is.
They were dying and you were not equipped with the tools and knowledge you needed to figure out why and to stop it. But the shelter is. They'll be able to figure out the problem and give the kittens a second chance.

For the runt of the litter, it was def. the best thing to do cause the runts are always the ones that usually don't survive in the wild and sorry to hear he had been put to sleep. I had a kitten a few years back that our neighbour put down without telling us after we had told him, after she gave birth, we were officially taking her in, my mom was crying when we found out. We ended up taking in a slightly older kitten that ended up being abandoned a few months later.

As for the kitten that got away, there's a good chance he or she may not be sick and that she/he is able to survive without needing human help or could of found a home already.
The only thing about traps, is you could catch any cat that wanders in looking for a free meal.

I remember having a kitten where we lived that was feral. She always wanted to come up around humans cause the cat she hung around with could come up to certain people and she always hung back but you could see her watching.

You definitly did the right thing. A couple months ago i had a similar situation. We found two week old kittens under my friends house so i took them home and bought kitten formula to nurse them. One of them inhaled the formula and passed :'( but the other is not in a great home enjoying her life :)
:D

More sad news the third kitty has pasted away yesterday. My mother found it on the porch it wasn't breathing at all.

Thats so sad... I would die if the two kittens I'm hand raising right now got sick, or something.

I've been caring for them for the last three weeks, and I've gotten so incredibly attached.

you did the right thing, I'd of wanted to take them in, when some cats were abandoned by my neighbor I took them in, but I know not everyone can do that hopefully the kitten found a good home

It's hard when something so young passes away after caring for them but you did all you could for them and I guess in the end, it was God's way of saying that he needed the kittens more than the world did.
