Looking at crash test ratings between a 2012 Jetta and a 2012 Mazda 3, frankly, the Jetta has an overall better rating. The Jetta has no ratings lower than a 4 star, while the Mazda 3 has several 2 and 3 star ratings. Granted, the Driver of a Mazda 3 will be fine, the passengers are not as well protected. Oh, and FYI, Toyota's actually hold up great as well. I came out a crash in one with only some bruised and a slight break to my nose. No other injuries.

yeah but the issue when i went to go see the vw today were that i cant get the model that i had before. the closest one to it will end up to 30k. and there were also over priced used cars with too high of mileage. and the guy that sold me my first one was no longer there so i cant get too good of a deal now. but on the mazda side i can get a new one for 21k and it will have more than my vw (except the heated seats) and we can talk them down to 20k because we have already bought from them once and they guy still works there.

also you looked at the mazda 3 sedan not the hatch back

So basically you are looking at price and features over the safety of the car? Realize, in your accident, you probably would have flipped in a Mazda. It has a lighter frame, and therefore flips easier and takes less abuse. Kali would also have sustained more injuries because the protection of Mazdas are geared towards the driver and not the passengers.

mazda 3 5 door (hatch back) has good safety ratings. better than the sedan.
also i cant afford a volkswagen and if i could it would still be over priced and with the required maintenance i would be pouring money out of my pockets for it. especially their required 40k mileage maintenance that would have cost me a large chunk on my last car.

It's a hair better, and still does badly in impacts. Only thing it improves on is that it is less likely to roll due to an increase in weight.

And with that, then look at cars other than VW and Mazda. You want a well made car? Look at Toyotas, Fords and Chevys. Stop being so picky with the niceties, and look for a damn practical and well made vehicle. Hell, my Mustang does well in all collisions except for rear, and that's because of the lower length of the rear seats and the trunk. Yes, it is a nice car, but I picked it for the fact that it was reasonable, held up, and is known for having a strong frame that does well in crashes/collisions.

Again, I can freaking testify to a TOYOTA. I got into an accident with my 04 Camry, and the police and EMTs looked at me and said that I was damn lucky not to have gotten worse injuries than I did. If I was in, oh say a Mazda 3 (even the 5 door), I would likely have suffered from a dislocated shoulder, several broken bones, and quite possibly neck/spinal injuries. This is my own testimony, and I stand by what I say.

my father was with me and he was also deciding on the cars with me he was thinking on volkswagen and mazda. and fords are crap because he owned one Fix Or Repair Daily (FORD) his didnt even make it farther than 100k mileage.
I dont trust toyotas. it is a issue i have with them about being secure. only chevy we own is a truck and we hardly use it so we dont look into other cars by them.
