Default Blue Throated Macaw   #1
Hey guys! I am currently in the process of adopting/rescuing a bird from owners that do not know how to care for her and are cutting her lifespan in half on accident.

Her name is Lilly and she is a 2 year old Blue Throated Macaw.

Her owners have her in that tiny tiny tiny cage right now. We will be picking her up later this month and throwing close to 2000 dollars at her owners to get them to give her to us.

I am doing a blog with her progress. There are less than 200 wild Blue Throated Macaws left in the world and little is known about them as they exhibit different behaviors than your average Macaws... The blog can be found at
http://parrotpress.wordpress.com/

I know I don't do posts like this often but this is something that means a lot to me, I am a HUGE animal activist and I just need a little help with this one!

She is lucky we found her. We actually found a really awesome local that loves birds that is selling us an 800 dollar cage for 300 dollars. He is even letting us pay it in a month or two when we find the funds.

Our Avian vet is letting us bring her in as soon as we pick her up and pay for the visit when we get the funds. We had been working on saving up to get a bird towards December but when we saw her in need we couldn't say no!

I already love her though and I haven't even brought her home :O

I just hope she doesn't have Metal poisoning from that cage.

Poor girl :( She can't stretch in that cage. I absolutely love birds and I'm happy to see you rescuing this one! Pet birds are often bought on impulse and get neglected and it really makes me upset to see them in filthy stinky cages that are placed in rooms by themselves with a blanket over their cage all the time. Ugh.

I really wish I could donate to your cause but I have been really strapped for cash since November. Please keep us updated here on Trisphee though! And if you can take videos and upload them to Youtube, that would be even better :D Good luck with her! I am sure you will make great owners :)

oh wow so great you are able to rehome her! I take in unwanted parrots, pets and aviary birds. We have large aviaries as well as a huge shed converted for our tamer birds but we also have our inside time with them too. I rehabilitate pet parrots if their neglected, I had one who feather plucked himself s o bad he was naked from the neck down, took a year for the feathers to start growing back and for him to start trusting us. He's a male quaker parrot and we think he was hit because he doesn't like male humans at all but loves me. I love discussing birds with bird people haha.

i am not a bird person(at all) and even /i/ know that is not enough room for her

man, it is a good thing you are doing and i am glad people are helping you rescue her, i know it's hard(we rescue cats and dogs) and i wish you a lot of luck, have you made a tumblr page yet?

also, do you think kickstarter is a good place to ask? i am not too sure what the requirements are but it is worth looking into

I do have a Tumblr post I will put a link to it right here ---> http://mandathezombieslayer.tumblr.c...the-process-of

thank you for all of the support guys! I will look into starting a kickstarter for her as well!

I will be making a youtube video tomorrow of us going to get her and bringing her home (it won't be HD because my phone is what I will record it on giggle-snort)

I am also updating that blog ---> http://parrotpress.wordpress.com/
with picture of her everyday and videos and info on how her training is going. I really am hoping to use this blog to inspire good bird owners to adopt and people who aren't ready not to get a parrot XD

Bird's are wonderful pets but they aren't for everyone. I feel really lucky to have found Lilly though she is one of my favorite species of Macaw, she is sweet and intelligent and I have a real importunity to give a bird that didn't have a chance to reach her full potential a real chance.

I really am happy to receive all this support and just spreading this link is more than enough to help!

Sorry I have been slow responding btw I have been preparing the house for her arrival and walking our dogs A LOT so they will be good and tired when she gets home tomorrow haha.

ps. I love seeing there are so many animal lovers on Trisphee it warms my heart <3

That would be awesome! Lilly is already getting a little help locally. The local parrot society wants me to bring her by they are going to help me get a good look at her feathers and see what we can do to fix the awful "chop-job" they did while trying to "clip" her wings.

I really hope her blood tests come back good. If she has metal poisoning the treatment will really slowdown the emotional healing process.

I intend to keep her free flight (meaning I will not clip her wings and eventually I will be teaching her to fly outdoors and return in hawk free zones). I also intend to bring her to the Virginia living museum on the days they talk about exotic animals as pets (trying to Discourage people from just going out and buying them with no knowledge of them.)

Lilly will go from being the ignored Macaw in the Garage to the center of attention.

I already train dogs and help a local Pit Bull rehab group to retrain and adopt out fighting dogs and I am hoping that experience will help with her rehabilitation.

I really just wish more people realized that owning a Macaw is not like owning a kitten. It is like having a Toddler. for 80 years.

Thank you to EVERYONE. You all have been very kind since I posted this and all this link spreading and word of mouth really does help! The more people that know the better, even if they do not donate this information will stick with them and they will pass it on to someone else!

Thank you!

you have to realize, people still think having a kitten is like having a toy that moves around, something easy to manage while forgetting cats are like small children too. it is too easy to compartmentalize animals as just something to have and more people have had cats and still think they are not real living creatures with needs and feelings outside of vindictive and hungry and birds are thought to need less care than cats even

what hope is there of 'hoping' most of can understand? it is a fight dear that as often as not you will lose

haha I forget sometimes that even kittens want attention! I didn't mean to offend any cat lovers! Cat's hate me so all my friends cats just ignore me. Unless I am cooking -.-

The fight will always go on. Our Husky Aurora was a rescue from an abusive breeder that used to cut her. I had to go to 3 separate court hearings as a witness to the abuse (as someone who adopted the puppies they mostly wanted me to talk about the lasting damage) she was charged with 97 counts of animal abuse. disgusting!

The sad part is though a lot of people don't realize they are being cruel. Our Malamute was a rescue from a sincerely nice woman. She didn't know however that malamutes kill their siblings and Akali's sister almost killed her. She was also eating food so bad for her that we almost had to have xrays done to see if there was more serious damage to her colon. Luckily she passed it and has been healthy since.

One of our Rabbits was a rescue too. From a really terrible pet store. I think he was abused by a woman because he hates woman...but he LOVES my husband, and men in general. He has warmed up to me some but he still doesn't like for me to hold him, he just lets me pet him and he will eat out of my hand.

All in all our rescue pets have adapted well. Aurora isn't afraid of little girls or men with beards anymore, Akali is healthy and happy, and Peter is...Peter. I love Rescues because I feel like I learn more kindness and compassion from them every day.

In total Lilly will be our sixth pet as we have another dog (our oldest) Nessa a Scottish terrier that cane from an AWESOME breeder. and we have a Holland Lop female named Sona...Sona is terrified of Cameras for some reason so I only have one picture of her. She also came from an awesome breeder that was devastated by a Tornado here and needed help taking care of the rabbits and relocating them when they lost their home. She game me Sona as a gift for all of my help!

anyhow since I KNOW eeeeveryone loves pet pics...HERE HAVE SOME MORE! BWAHAHA

Nessa (Summer haircut)

Nessa the day we got her (she still sleeps in that bed!)

and the one and only picture of sona the camera-shy bunbun

He is so cute! I wish cats let me snuggle them like that 3: I think its because I am loud and I move around a lot. Disrupt the napping haha XD

Buns are great pets IMO. They dont mind when you leave them alone and socialized ones don't mind when you won't leave them alone :3
