Default Where the Sidewalk Ends   #1
Has anyone else read Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein?

I remember back in elementary school, the librarian...would rarely let anyone check it out. Like at certain times she would. I always made sure to check it out because it was never at the local public library and not even at the middle/high school library.

Recently, at Wal-mart, I found the 30-year anniversary edition of this book and had to buy it.

Am I the only one who this book makes them so nostalgic? It makes me miss my childhood...even though I can't fully remember it.

What's your favorite (or one of your favorite) poems from this book?

Damn, I can't find that book anywhere. Might be somewhere in the closets....Ah well. Thank god for tables of contents...

The "Captain Hook" poem was disturbing at the time I read it >.> The "Little Blue Engine"...now that was depressing. "Hector the Collector", "I Will Not Hatch", "For Sale", and "Me-Stew" are hilarious, in my opinion.

I read a lot of Shel's books.

The Giving Tree. T_T

I can't remember if it was "sidewalk" or "attic"
that had the poem about the hypochondriac.
I just remember relating to it!

I found the poem.

It's called
"Sick"

still can't find which book it was in.

We're all mad here.
I've never read the book but I know we have it around the house. We actually have a CD of his songs. The guys looks absolutely insane on the cover. Some of the stuff on it I'd be a bit hesitant to show to really young kids. "Our House" for example.

It goes on like that.

Has some fun adult stuff on there too, like "Bury Me in My Shades" or "Blue Eyes." I love that one. ;)

That's Sidewalk, because I remember it and loved it. There're a few that Wikipedia doesn't list...because I remember a lot more >.>

Holy wow "Our House" sounds awesome!! Not for kids, maybe.
Then again the Scary Stories books by Alvin Schwartz were sold at school-run Book Fairs. Go figure because they were actually banned from some of my third and fourth grade classes.

"Blue Eyes" is about a guy trying to pick up a woman at a bar. I love the exchanges.

"I walk into a bar
And I see you sitting alone
Can I sit down beside ya, blue eyes?"

Woman: well my boyfriend is in the bathroom, he'll be back any second, he's seven feet tall and always carries a gun.

"Well if I beat up your boyfriend
and I take away his gun
and I sit down beside ya
Can I buy you a drink, blue eyes?"

repeat. :D.

All the songs sound quite folkish and childish, his voice too which is uber creepy by the way, which makes the lyrics even more amusing.

Hmm, I can't remember what the poem was called, but I'm pretty sure it's in this book. I think it goes something like this:

"Mama said I'd loose my head, if it wasn't fastened on,
but today I guess it wasn't, cause while playing with my cousins
it fell off and rolled away, and now it's gone..."

It continues, and while I know part of it, it's more fuzzy. lol

I've gone to look for myself, if I should return before I get back keep me here.

I found it in the breakroom at Walmart...I did not enjoy the book and enjoyed it less by the picture of the guy on the back. His feet are directly in front of the camera for all to see. =|

Didn't know Boy named Sue was Silverstein. I've only heard the song version of it and it sounds pseudo country in a way.

Dragon of Ice
I have read the book, but it has been years since I have seen it. Currently it is packed away amongst my books. Overall was interesting and a good read.
I'm only a man with a candle to guide me
I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me
A monster, a monster

Den of Two Dragons

The Bunker

Feel free to stop by and post!

I've turned into a monster
A monster, a monster
And it keeps getting stronger
