A good friend to talk to when things go to hell in a hand basket.
Default What if someone called you a Weeaboo   #1
Ok if I post this in the wrong place can you move it to the right one? Anyway, the other day I was at the bookstore looking at the Manga section when suddenly someone yelled out:

"OMG IT'S A WEEABOO!"

I turn to see a 10 year old boy pointing at me as he said it and I was confused on what the word was. It wasn't until I got home to look it up and well it was a bit shocking and funny at the same time.
If you don't what a Weeaboo is here's what it says"

The term is used to describe a person of non-japanese descent (usually white) who is incredibly obsessed with Japanese things. Like Anime, Manga, Video Games, ect. Also they think Japan is the coolest place on earth and want to move there. Plus they have a hard time speaking the language correctly and bombs on proper educate as well.

So I question to you, what do you think about this word? Do you think people around you call you this word because you like something different and not what they like?
As for me I am a little Weeaboo but not a full blown one trust me I am not I like other stuff as well but learning another country is cool and I get to know stuff I didn't know about and use them as much as I can where I live.

Please help me on my quest if you can: http://www.trisphee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7606

isn't that funny
i know to look at me online i come off as one before i open my mouth but noone has ever accused me of it XD

i think it is a word like 'chink' 'nigger' 'nerd' 'retard' 'gold-digger' 'slut' 'faggot' or 'fatty', the point of it is to separate out a group of people on a single facet of their existence and not only make it the sole defining feature of them but to make sure they, and everyone around them knows that they are something horrible and ridiculous and shameful. it is a base insult whose definition only covers maybe /one/ person in several thousand but is used to encompass all who are different in that sort of way simply because it is easier than trying to understand why they are what they are and judge them on their merits

the short answer is though it weirds some people out, especially americans who are highly self-centered to the point where their own obsession with 'patriotic' favoritism is seen as the norm and anything else is offensive(unfortunately this mania is part of what encourages 'weeaboo' tendencies, personally i love a lot japanese crap but if the same things are made in other places my favoritism lies with the best version regardless of the letters on the package)

I have not had anyone calling me that, I had a friend that was called that. Even though I do love my anime, manga, cosplay, etc. However I don't do the stereotypical things like incorporating the Japanese language into English like "that's so KAWAII DESU!!!!".

To me I cherish other country's culture (such as trying new foods), not to be overly obsessed with Japan itself, I just favor Japan. I don't become a fangirl over someone who is from Japan.

I used to be considered a weeaboo, but now; if I did move to japan I would be so stuck and marooned on the island with no knowledge of the culture and language.

The word doesn't bother me, what does bother me is the fact that the parent of this 10 year old allowed him to learn and use this word.

I know it isn't as strong as some language, but as a Dad, I would be very put off if my son did something like that.

Even if he knew what that word meant, shouting at random strangers isn't polite. Being ignorant and judgmental is far worse.

I don't care <.< So, I like Mangas, Animes and Video Games. What of it? And listen to Japanese and Korean music (Amongst german, latin, spanish, russian, something I can't even tell what it is... to name a few).

I like other cultures, it's not my fault you're not open and maybe even racist. It just happens that Japan makes everything that's interest me.

Interesting fact to note, I've been called a bajillion things, but never this, which is weird considering I don't exactly hide the fact I'm into Mangas, Animes and all that. I also think that most people who would actualy use this word don't even know about it or what it's mean. Well, around where I live anyway. Hell, I even know people who would be qualified Weeaboo that don't even know the word.

She Who Is Unnecessarily Formal At Times
I honestly have no problem with being called that unless it becomes a regular thing. I'm Asian and I love manga and anime, and previously, to an extreme extent, so now there's actually only a small chance I'd be a weaboo. Anyways, it annoys me when people refer to people who draw in anime-ish styles as weaboos. Some of these people are perfectly open to other cultures...so why would anyone accuse them of being Japanophiles just because they like the art styles... It makes little sense to me.

I'm quite busy lately. I may poof for several days at a time.

The word is ghastly. It's insulting for me. Just because I wear a Kingdom Hearts jacket and jokingly call a friend Axel doesn't make me a weeaboo.

Its a word, thats all its is. I don't mean to come out sounding harsh, but the hard fact is the only reason people make words like this up is to get a negative reaction, If something like that happened to me. (and it has before) I would simply smile and tell them thank you and walk off, You would be surprised what something like that will do.

Honestly, I don't give two flying f***s about it cause those people don't even know who they're talking to. They don't know me like I know myself. Just cause you read a manga, doesn't mean you want to do all that stuff. I can draw, I've learned about the Japanese culture, but that doesn't mean I want to go there, learn the language, etc.

People just judge too quickly and it's very stupid. Just don't worry about it.

If someone called me that, it would be about right. I want to go there, maybe life there depending on the experiences I have (or maybe not...or maybe I'd find my future husband XD), and I know I don't know a ton about Japanese culture, but I am learning. I am one.

But if someone called me one (because I consider the most important part of weeaboo to be annoying) I'd go around going DESUDESUDESU! I'd troll them essentially.

I got called one once. I laughed it off. People throw that word around so freely. I'm not obsessed with anime, I just enjoy it like anything else.

I'm not sure what I think of it.
Unfortunately, it's sometimes used as a slur towards regular anime fans, like in your case. It's happened to me a couple of times as well.
A weeaboo is generally defined as someone who is unhealthily obsessed with anime and Japan.

I woulda turned around and took him to his parents and told them that they need to wash his mouth out with soap and then teach their 'rude little rat' some manners. If I ever have kids and they ever do such a thing.. they would be grounded for months.

I would have taken it offensive (even if the kid didn't mean any harm) because where i come from, anime/japan fans do -not- like that weeaboo term and consider it a discriminative term. That and pointing is wrong D< I woulda asked him if he'd like his fat little finger cut off.. and if he didn't, then stop pointing at people. >.>
