Job/manager issues. Cussing may be present >_> | #1
I've been having problems with my managers all along. For awhile back at the end of August, I had written down my hours I absolutely couldn't work (because of class) and that I would not work more than 15 hours a week max because of trying to maintain my grades and such. Well, my hours were anywhere from 20-30 hours because they didn't bother hiring more people. After two weeks, they did go back down.
Recently my one coworker got a transfer to the other Staples two weeks after asking. I put in four months prior and got no word back. The one who got it, said I was silly for wanting to transfer just because it was closer (though it was more than that but it was my answer to questions). Three other coworkers quit. Suddenly the hours have gone up. I'm already falling behind in my reading because of the quantity and added in the hours I work (8-13 hours). No notice or anything, they suddenly have me working almost 20 hours next week. Two of the shifts are 8-12, then I go to class 1-4. Today I did that and I didn't get to eat until 1, and it was an Atkins bar. My sugar dropped and I was so cold I was shivering while wearing a jacket in a class. The paper I had given them clearly stated no more than 15, signed and dated. I have a copy. How do I approach them on this and the transfer? And would it be okay to go to corporate about it because there was the issue of already telling them I cant' do more than 15. They said they know school comes first and respect that; it was said during my first interview. Help? -Hiatus- Leave a message.

You do need to go to corporate. For someone else to get a transfer in two weeks while you've waited more than four months is crazy. For them to give you so many hours when you stated you can't work that many, and for a VERY valid reason. You need to use whatever you can to get it worked out, because you are NOT getting treated fairly at all.

Is there a medical reason you can't work more than that? Because otherwise, they do not have to accommodate you by law. So if those hours are just for classes, it's not their problem. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I'm just telling you the truth.
Be careful of what and how you say it when you say something to anyone about this-be it a manager or corporate. It could get you fired. So be polite as possible. Do not get angry. You should talk to someone about this. It's not like you kept it hidden (but they don't have to accommodate you...though they might). And start bringing food with you. Like little cupcake or a bag of chips (or a couple of Atkins bars...whatever). Now if you need a break to munch due to sugar level-a medical reason-that they will have to accommodate you.

I couldn't work til a certain time everyday because I had kids I had to get off to school and pick up from school. They started to make me work hours I couldn't. But I didn't do what you did. I told them I won't work them. They ended up giving me 2 hrs twice a week to get me to quit. I was supporting a family on my paycheck, but I never went to corporate like I should of. School is very important and you shouldn't let them do this to you. Especially since you gave them written warning about your schedule and they seemed to be ok with it. If they agreed to it, then they do have to go along with your schedule they ok'd. I wish you the best of luck with this. I hope things can work out for the best for you. »·,´·˙(´·˙¸ ¸˙·,)˙·,´•·˙·,¯´·˙·• •·˙·,¯´·˙·•╭☆╯•·.·´¯`·.·• •·.·´¯`·.·•´`·.(`·.¸ ¸.·´).·´`·» uǝʇʇoƃɹoɟ puoʎǝq sı ɔıƃɐɯ ɟo ǝʌol ǝɥʇ

Yokuutsu; I do. Because I have to maintain my blood sugar I have to eat about every four hours which I never get to. Yesterday i had a bad reaction to low sugar. And I can't have food at the registers. We aren't allowed and I was forced to sign a paper that said I understood this along with other things like homework. I'm never rude about things with them. I've always been polite.
Saiyouri & Serra; I may talk to them (managers) one last time. If then that doesn't work I shall go to corporate. I have to give them a chance to correct I believe first. They know I also get low blood sugar and on basis of hire they knew I put school first. I just have to remember; it's just a job. School is the important thing. -Hiatus- Leave a message.

Then you have a case against them if you want to sue them. Did you give them a doctor's note...or whatever saying you have a sugar problem and eat so often? Because if you just told them....they could technically say they were not informed of that problem. Though that won't change your hours at all. They don't have to accommodate your school schedule. But they do have to do reasonable accommodating for medical problems due to ADA. If you're in America that is. And giving you a break to munch on a snack is reasonable.

I told them. I hadn't gotten a note from my doctor yet but I am gonna talk to them. If they can't respect it then I'll call my endocrinologist and have her write me a doctor thingy saying so. And I am in America. I can't even get 15 minute breaks some days. Actually for months I couldn't.

Well, I'm taking legally if you haven't noticed....there's nothing you can do until you give them medical records or a note or whatever the hell before they legally have to accommodate you (Though many might do it without a note). You need to go and just get the note so if they don't do it....you can possibly file a lawsuit...because who knows what might happen next time your sugar gets low? You might pass out or something instead. Just saying.

Yokuutsu; Yeah I know. If my sugar gets low I get irritable. If it gets too low I can pass out into a comatose state which is very unhealthy. I'm gonna talk to the first and if they don't, I'll go to my doctor, get the note and then tell them they have to follow it.
Saiyouri; -Hugs back.- Thank you. I shall try. I just hope they do. -Hiatus- Leave a message.
