Default Graduation   #1
Is scary as hell....

I am graduating from my 4 year college on May 10th..... and I am a wee bit scared. I don't have a job yet for after college and while it does worry me what is really freaking me out is the fact that I wont have any more schooling to do unless I get a masters degree.

Anyone graduating from any thing this year? Or already in the post-graduate jobs with advice?

Nope, I never even went to college. Unless one week there counts xD

What did you doing you schooling in? Maybe talking about it will help give you ideas? Afterall conversation here can't be done as flippantly in real life...usually. My mouth can go off and say things before my brain finishes processing information lol

What Kenai said...
You could either look for jobs, or make your own. I'll likely be working that way as well.
Err...I don't know fully. I've been having similar worries sans having a college degree.

I am an Anthropology major, which is an obscure major as is and many go on to get a masters in it.

I am looking for jobs, over 40 applications sent in and no call backs except for ones that I couldn't comply to.

I am not really looking for the advice of "apply for jobs" I do that. It is more the transition that scares me.

I'm in a similar boat, Tiva.
I'm gonna be graduating next Fall.
And I feel like when you're a kid, everything is set for you.
You go to school, graduate continue onto college graduate, then what? Oh get a job. But what's after that?

Where we differ though is I don't really know what I want to do with my life.
I'm getting my Bachelors in Computer Science and getting a minor in Math.
I'm hoping I can find a job that I won't hate because I don't like programming for my classes. I hate the way it's set up, and I'm just hoping I can find a good job.

Schooling feels like a security to me, if you can't get a job at least you're doing something.
I've thought about going back for a Master's or something but I rather take a break first and work for a bit before jumping back in.
Maybe save up some money before submitting myself to more school.

To quote my dad and a number of other people I'm sure, you go to university to get an education, not a job.

I graduated a few years back with a degree in English Lit which is pretty darn useless outside of teaching. I'm actually planning on doing more school to pick up something that will actually get me an income. I really enjoyed getting my degree and I liked Uni but it's certainly not about to make me much money.

A lot of things can affect jobs, besides a degree, such as where you are willing to go, and what you are willing to do. I have an education, but little professional experience, so I'm moving to a rural area where my prospects for a decent paying job without specialized training are much better.

I'd suggest considering what serious limitations you have and what you can be flexible on when looking for jobs. A couple friends I have who are out of school found they had to start out with non-ideal jobs that experienced people tend not to want, and work their way into some seniority to move up in the world. For example, a new teacher got her first jobs in small towns before being able to get one in the city she wanted to be in.
