I haven't found a thread specifically dedicated to this show which in my opinion is one of Moffats best works sans Dr. Who (which he picked up after the show had started so I don't consider it completely original work). But, not less amazing. This page will be filled with gratuitous spoilers so be warned.

So, I personally was expecting this situation (the above comment)...though the actual novels did nothing of the sort.
Gallagher got me watching the series.

[Quiet Man Cometh]

Just watched Season 2, Episode 3 tonight. Probably my least favourite episode so far, but that's likely because I had guessed what was going to happen from all the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes episodes I watched as a kid, so I was mostly twiddling my thumbs and waiting to see if I was right.

I really like the series so far. My dad isn't so fond of Cumberbatch but I like him, possibly because he reminds me somewhat of Jeremy Brett, who is the "Holmes" I grew up with (I started a thread a while back called "Who's Your Sherlock?" on the topic of actors).

I like how the show is using some of the source material and tweaking it for the new, contemporary setting, and the occasional joke about it (re: 'The Speckled Blonde' ;))

Story:

I'll admit, my favorite season remains season 1. It was much more "cloak-and-dagger" then. However, somewhat realistically, as Sherlock became more popular, he's become more direct, letting other factors act stealthily. They sort of alluded to the difference with the third season - he works with the cops more. I like the climax of the third season as the situation somewhat forced Sherlock back to the earlier point...and, as could be predicted, he miscalculated as a result.

Characters:

Okay, I've said this to Galla before, but as far as I can tell, Sherlock is less of a high-functioning sociopath, and more of an extremely high-functioning autistic - to which, people do often debate the difference - Sociopath's not wanting a perceived "flaw" and Autistics not wanting to be seen as "cold and unfeeling." As far as the psychopaths, I feel they are to a good degree accurate.
Then there is third season Mrs. Watson...who if they are trying to make her to be psychotic...I don't see it. She seems more like a caring person who was employed in nasty work and should be suffering from PTSD (the lack thereof being the only indication of something off). To a sociopath or a psychopath, as far as I know, partners are like valued pawns or toys that return affection. I don't see such a person crying like she did. However, making her an assassin was an excellent way to tie together things.
Moriarty is...a bit over-the-top to me. A person who could run such a large operation I'd expect to be more like the villain from season 3.

Section 3:

On another note, it is fascinating to see large elements of the tales of Sherlock and Watson brought to modern times. I can see much...and may begin practicing turning the tree in my head (think in pictures, and my most common starting point is a tree like the Yggdrasil) into something like a "mind palace" to assist my memory.

LE GASP SEASON 3 TALK!?

Episode 1 of season 3. My favfavfavfavFAVORITE! HIT HIM AGAIN, JAWN, I LOVE IT! YESSSS! And the emotions in their faces, it gets me. Every. Single. Time.



I do enjoy the idea of autistic Sherlock, just like I enjoy the idea of Johnlock, but I just don't think it's legit. There doesn't have to be anything wrong with him for him to be the way he is, and from everything we've seen, there isn't. His behavior is a combination of his brilliance and the way society (and his brother, don't get me started on all the bad influence there) has treated him.

On Mary- Oh puh-LEASE, they are not making her psychotic! That is the first time I ever heard that idea, and it's utter bull. You know, you can have a past and not show horrible PTSD. In fact, you can go through trauma and not get PTSD at all and -gasp!- not be psychotic!

Moriarty is perfect as he is. The vibe he puts off is brilliant because you don't expect him to be dangerous, like you don't expect Mary to be potentially dangerous. But the fact is that anyone can be. They won't be wearing bells or doing the suspicious eye thing.

So, before Sherlock, I had nothing to call the way my brain works, and while it isn't really the same system, you should see all the information I have filed away on OCs, storylines, universe mechanics, species detailing, research notes... I've slowly trying to get all the information I've been storing for the last 10 years down just in case.

Now I just call it my mind place all the time, because apparently it's weird to remember so much lame rp information like I do, lol. I mean, I'm 90% sure I could still explain all the scenes in the first rp I ever did with my best friend, and I sure as hell haven't even looked at it in 4-ish years.

As to the Mary being psychotic...season 3 episode 3.
John: Are all the people I know sociopaths (or psychopath, can't recall which was said)
Sherlock and Mary: Yes.

Me: No...Mary is not the same as Sherlock or Moriarty. (And that was what I was complaining about there)

Actually, I would label Sherlock's brother as the sociopath, and Sherlock as having learned such traits from his brother (with their mother being off, and therefore distant, and their father being busy), and sociopathy is a much more common trait found in modern politics.

Actually, I'd expect Moriarty to be a bad guy. That is what I meant by over-the-top. His character is trying too hard to be...something he is not, and I could tell that from step one.

Actually, something very similar to the visuals of the "mind palace" would be the trait of "thinking in pictures." It is what made me think of it in the first place. *Is now trying to use the tree-castle in my mind as a visual/movie library*
Admittedly, it is not the same when I think about it.

Not literally they all are, but that's the kind of simplifications people make when they're upset. Plus, it makes for a snappier line. You have to take some of these with a grain of salt. Yes, this is a show with great attention to detail, but that doesn't mean that every single word is an end all. None of the dialogue would be organic that way.

Brodude does seem much more like one than Sherlock is, and I agree fully, Sherlock obv learned a lot of his disconnection tendencies from him. Not all, but the foundation was certainly set at a young age.

No but see, that trying-too-hard vibe and something-he's-not view is exactly what I mean. Sort of. Let's try that again. It's obvious he's trying to be bad, and the way he behaves makes it seem like overcompensation, therefore he is bad, but obviously can't be that bad if he's trying to put on such a display. His bells and suspicious eye thing are an in-plain-sight cover for how dangerous he actually is.

Ahahaha, I don't think in pictures. Like seriously. I don't even think in words half the time. Kind of makes the making a proper mind place thing difficult. I can't really picture a building to store my files in very well. Disappoint.
