The PSP versions were better in my opinion, because of the added features and being more true to the original game.

They all happen in the same "world" so to speak, but you don't need to play any of them to enjoy a single one.

Yes. The main characters are all school students. The first two don't have the same time related element and the later ones though, so it's more a part of their character than a game aspect.
Just try to remember to not get cocky when playing, it's very difficult to actually be overpowered because of the way the battle system is made.
