I usually only tune actual people out by accident. Like if the conversation is boring, but I catch certain key words in another conversation nearby or a good song comes on the radio. Or I'm working on a project. Or when my mom would drone on and on for over an hour about the latest book she read (usually a Debbie Macomber or some harlequin romance type book). I would mechanically respond with "ah", "mmhmm", and "okay" periodically while listening just enough to catch when the conversation actually got back to...an actual conversation and not a detailed description of the plot of the book including in depth description of characters, which often led to tangents about other books in the series that the character in question was also in.

I'm always nervous to work with other people's characters, but sometimes it can be fun when the person, like yourself, isn't super concerned with accurate portrayal and is more interested in artistic interpretation.

my best friend steals my characters to write stories and things all the time, and it ends up being very interesting discussing the ways she thinks they would behave vs my first impulse for how they behave, because honestly? a lot of times? her interpretation isn't wrong, it's just not what i thought of

That's actually an interesting way to kind of get a more well-rounded character actually because you can get a good view on how others see the character as well as how you see them so you can use that to flesh them out some.
