To address a couple other points:

It's not actually that the post box needs to be scooted towards the avatar; it's that your avatar happens to have a lot of empty space on one side. Lots of items fill up that space and the layout is designed around that.

The buttons were designed for the old layout and we're still working on making new ones. They don't clash too horribly so we didn't make it a priority to get new ones for this release. Likewise with the notification area in the header when you have a trade or a PM, as well as the gold bar -- designed for the old layout, new one is in development, but it doesn't look TOO horrible so we didn't want to slow down the release for it.

As for the teal, there are other color schemes on the way, and because of feedback from users we're looking for ways to bring in a contrasting color to add some variety without looking gaudy.

Your comment that the background needs some texture is well taken; I was already planning on adding some texture to it.
