It really isn't as bad as it sounds thankfully, but it's still very cold in this house and the oven works really well heating the place, but it uses so much electricity compared to the space heaters, so I only turn it on for about 10 minutes at a time every so often when it gets really cold.

Oh wow, Ginger. Do you have an extra blanket or sheet that you could drape over that broken window? It won't block it off, but it'll help to cut the draft. You could roll up a sheet and put it in front of the doors (if the bottoms are where most of the draft is coming through). That's what we do here in our house. Our house was built in the 50's and is really drafty (thanks to some poor rennovations). We keep a couple of random crocheted pieces (they were scrap yarns crocheted into pieces that just so happen to fit in front of the doors) at the doors. It keeps the cold air from getting under the doors. If your windows are drafty, you could take a towel and roll it up to use as a barrier there.
Of course, you probably already know most of this >.<' And I think I'm about to start rambling... >.>' *ninja poofs to keep from rambling* ![]() ![]()

I hope some heavy duty tape and cardboard or newspaper help with all the drafts, Ginger. <3

Kilala - The front door has a draft all the way around it. We've tried weatherstripping it on the outside, but the door won't close if we weatherstrip all the way around. So the only part with weatherstripping is the top. I've got a towel rolled up at the bottom of the other door, but the entrance door is trickier because we go in and out of the house. We don't have very many blankets but I'll look for heavy duty tape and cut some cardboard boxes, then cover the bottom part of the window with a small blanket folded in half at least. Last night got really cold, but thankfully our room stayed warm and we had 3 blankets on us.
Angel - Thank you :) I really hope it helps! It snowed here last night, maybe about an inch or two, so thankfully not too bad. « ☼ ☾ ✰ » Semi-Active.

My roommate and I actually have to keep our window open when we;re in there -- yes, the heating is adjustable , but the doors aren't particularly great and the heating from the hallway seeps inside a lot. And we're on the highest floor, haha...
With the windows open, it doesn't actually get too cold, even when it's way below freezing -- there's more hot air going out than cold coming in. If you have electrical tape or like...the sealing tape they use for faucets, those might work as makeshift weatherproofing. STONEWALL WAS A RIOT

Espy - Thanks for the idea! I'll look for electrical tape.
I'm not wearing socks, but I'm wearing slippers and my feet and ankles are frozen. I have to keep wrapped in blankets and can't have any exposed skin because it's so cold in this house. « ☼ ☾ ✰ » Semi-Active.

Maybe roasting a turkey, or making some all day stew, would be a good excuse to run your oven and keep warm.

Angel Spirit Girl - I was thinking the same haha. Actually, there is a full chicken in the freezer I could take out overnight and bake it in the oven tomorrow. xD

Just a thought, but is your front door attached to a hallway or anything? It might help to section off parts of the house with hanging sheets or curtains or something to cut down on the drafts. Pulling curtains across glass windows will also help to retain some heat, since it's an extra layer it has to get through. Make like a little foyer in front of the door, so that when you open it the air hits the sheet or curtain instead of going all the way into the house.

Is it sad that I wish there was a like button for Quiet's idea?

If there are not enough bed sheets to do that with, you could try taping together sheets of newspaper.

Very good idea, Quiet! The thing is, I don't think my boyfriend would go for the sheet thing because he grew up in a middle class family where everything in their house had to look perfect. I mean his mom would say their house was a mess if there was nothing but mail and newspaper on the kitchen table and a few petty little dishes in the sink. The front door enters into the kitchen by the way.
