Anime News Network: Crunchyroll's Website Redirected to Server With Malicious Software

The web address for the streaming service Crunchyroll is redirecting to a server that forces most web browsers to download software without authorization since before 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday. The front page of the new server claims "A New Media Player" for Crunchyroll (with grammatical errors), and automatically sends a "CrunchyViewer.exe" program for download.

Crunchyroll's official German Twitter account is advising users to avoid accessing the Crunchyroll website, explaining that there is a problem with "malicious software." If people already downloaded the CrunchyViewer.exe program, the German account also urges them to delete the program, to not run the program, and to scan their computers for possible viruses or other malicious software. The account adds, "if you have run [the CrunchyViewer.exe program], change all your passwords and backup your data."

The service's German Twitter account said that people who access the service through a Crunchyroll app (instead of through the website) "should be safe," although the service is not streaming as of press time. The Twitter account emphasized that the service's servers have not been compromised, and explained that "at the moment, it appears to be DNS hijacking." Domain Name Service hijacking allows an unauthorized third party to redirect traffic from the proper server to another server, similar to what happened to ANN in August.

Crunchyroll's representatives in the United States have not yet responded to ANN's request for comment. Crunchyroll's German Twitter account notes that Crunchyroll's American social media staff members are not awake yet. The German account has been posting warning messages in both German and English.

Services that attempt to identify the geographical location of a server, based on its numeric Internet Protocol address, list the redirected server in the Netherlands. However, these services do not necessarily give an accurate geographical location.

Update: Instead of the unauthorized server with the CrunchyViewer.exe software download, some users may see the proper Crunchyroll server, but with a message reporting that "an error has occurred."

Guys! Make sure to change your passwords when the website is back up.

People are all like, "CR needs to make better security, they need to update their security"

and I'm just here.. "They need rework everything from security to website layout.. "

they still use.. flash or something for their web-browser player... everyone else has switched to HTML5... and word is Flash is going to discontinue in a few years...

Their forums and news section starts lagging after few seconds of browsing and lurking. Having to force refresh just to make the lag go away is annoying. Word is, is that there is old code clashing with other coding or something like that. its just the site lags and the coding needs reworked.

They need to update their genre tags.. they have a few BL anime a crap ton of Supernatural anime and no tags for those...

When they loose the license to an anime, instead of taking the page down, the site will still say they have it:


As you can see, Jigoku Shoujo Mitsugane is there in the list, they haven't had that anime for over a year.. and when you click to go to it, it takes you to this: Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae

This is prolly causing unnecessary strain on the server. And its just rude to those of us who want to see a particular anime, and get redirected to more of a 'fan page'

Many of their users complain about their accounts being hacked lately. Instead of fixing the problem, they blame the user.

Sooo much is wrong with the site, not just it's security... everything needs reworked.

Yes i agree they need to update their layout. Security is as well a thing that needs to be improved on but like you can only do so much for security. THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY TO GET IN

According to what I've read, they are using outdated security or something and never updated it. I don't know how old it is though. But keeping things like that up to date to keep us safe should be their top priority.
