Nah. In Magic, it's all about usefulness. The game has been around so long now (I mean, it WAS the first TCG ever!) that almost everything is functionally similar, if not identical, to something else!

It just matters how competitive the card is, especially in Standard and Legacy!

A few of them do, yep. Like Merfolk of the Pearl Trident. Magic is not just about its competitive players, and core sets are meant to be more for the new players and such!

Sets are made to be pleasing to all kinds of players, as much as possible (even Commander players, as of late!), and core sets are dedicated to two groups of people: New players and casual players.

well, if you're looking to play standard, then I would suggest Innistrad block for that, though a few select rares from SOM and M13 may be useful, such as Hero of Bladehold from Scars of Mirrodin block, and Odric, Master Tactician from M13

i found this but it looks like im gonna have to put out a lot of money to find some of those cards... i already have a few of those cards in play sets or i possess 1 or 2 of them

I would run 2 Thalia and four of either Silverblade or Crusader, but that's just my two scoops of poop

I got a couple of Odrics at the pre-release event I went to :D Weirdly Rancor was an incredibly rare pull. Between me and by friends (50 boosters) we got one.. and i was getting doubles of mythic rares :/

I'm loving the rare merfolk as well. I built a deck around m13 merfolk and some clones and got a turn 5 win o-o
