halloween... it's not really celebrated here in the Philippines that much... people just go to the cemetery to pray for their deceased relatives.

Depends on the coven.

In fact, Trick or Treating was a Wiccan tradition first. All Hallows Eve is the night when the barrier between this world and others is thinnest. Monster and ghosts cross over easiest on this night, and taking the disguise of such a creature protects you from being chosen as a target by them.

Those who do not are expected to give something to the beasts to keep them from being a target of their mischevious nature.

It is also a time to remember those who have passed on, because of all times of the year a Seance is best done on this night to speak to them.

And nowadays, Christians latch on to this belief that depending on what your costume is, the witches cast spells on that particular type of costume that they've chosen, and all people of that chosen costume type are cursed for the year to have misfortune to befall them. They may even be possessed by a demon.

I can't even say that all Christians believe this, but my stepdad's parents' church preaches this. I remember I dressed as Heather from The Blair Witch Project that year, and I had to lie and say that my costume was "something safe" like a really tired girl.

I remember thinking how crazy that was, especially considering I started being creative with my costumes picking stuff that few would think to dress as at around that time. Like one year, I sprayed a wig with grey temporary spray dye, bought a cape, a clip on tie, brought a fake sword and gun and went out as Vicious from Cowboy Bebop for Halloween that year.

Probably wouldn't like that too much. His father doesn't preach that dating is wrong, unlike this one pastor I went to church at where he actually believes dating automatically leads to sex outside of marriage and will, if one asks, find a person a husband or wife. In which, they can date until they figure out when their wedding will be, but they do not move in together until their marriage is finalized.
All the churches I went to were definitely against anything that could be considered sexy or seductive though. So glad I'm not of that belief anymore. They'd definitely be threatening hellfire and damnation on my girlfriend and myself.

Yeah, I know right? But, to be fair, many sects stole it to honor their "saints" on that day from what I know.

Yeah, it's sad people think like this, and even sadder I heard recently that some Christian mother is burying her 12 year old daughter because the said daughter missed her dad so much that she just wanted to go to Heaven and see him, and hung herself. Also, I had a Catholic uncle who killed himself because my aunt and he were going through a divorce. These things make me sad that religion is so prevalent in society. Sure, religion does a lot of good, but I really wish we could put at least the harmful practices away.
