Bela Lugosi's role as Dracula was supposedly originally to be played by Lon Chaney, the man of 1000 faces. Interestingly, Dracula ruined Lugosi's career by being such an icon to live up to in other performances.

Not sure if "made to" is correct - it did inspire a series of african-american horror movies, though.
