We used to get more snow when I was a kid, nowadays if it stays on the sidewalks it turns into icky brown slush within a day. But I plan to visit my aunt on the countryside this winter, who still gets like half a meter on average.

My friend up north (who gets light fluffy snow usually) said the one time she tried to drive in that kind of snow, she got stuck.

We'll see what happens this year.
Yup. It's something to do with the moisture and temperature, I figure. Big flakes happen when it's a higher temperature, and there is more time for the flakes to build up before they fall. Like up to -5 C or so. Smaller flakes when it's drier and colder. Wet snow is evil to trudge through (you can run through the light fluffy stuff) but it makes good snow things. The dry snow where I used to live doesn't have any moisture in it to make it stick, so you need to add water if you want to make anything, or use your hands to partially melt the snow.

The evil thing is that it's all light and fluffy until you move it. I've heard it's about the dry flakes being incredibly fragile. When they first settle, the little arms knot together and the air in between the flakes makes things nice and fluffy. If you move it, the little arms break and the snow flakes settle flat into a pile that you need a hammer to get through. Seriously, I've hurt things encountering it.

My favourite thing to do in the snow now is just fall into it. In deep snow it makes for a delightful, fully supported body fitting chair and it's lovely to lay in until you start to freeze through your coat. Takes some effort to get up though.

And not sure how, but sometimes the most inept dog can become a master catcher if there are snowballs involved. Our young dog, you can just shovel the snow into her face and she's happy as can be.

Rebooting....
I went on vacation with a couple of girl friends of mine, one from up north and another who never lived anywhere but Southern California. We were vacationing in Sedona and when my LA friend arrived, she greeted us with a handful of snow. "It's SNOW!!! It's REALLY SNOW!!!!" She had never seen it before and it was great fun watching her like a little kid playing with the stuff.

My friend from up north who is used to so much snow that it blocks her doorway, was all "ho hum. Yep. Snow." :P

You should come visit me, mdom and Sternum! I think we have around 3 inches (7.62 centimeters) of snow right now!
v View from my bedroom window the morning after the first snow. It snowed off and on the next few days... v

I agree about the comfort and the duration of comfort of sitting on snow. I've done that a lot as a kid.

Back when I was a kid we used to get several foot of snow (I remember tunneling under the upper crust and vanishing), and some scary blizzards once in awhile. Now days if we get two foot of snow it's a miracle, and blizzards are just a thing for drivers to gripe about.
I'm not very active right now, because of stuff. If you don't see me around and you really need to get hold of me, you can yell at me over at one of these places?

Ah, pretty!

Another fun thing in the snow is when you have a small hill, walk up there, lay down (ski clothes or similar recommended) and then roll down the hill through the snow.
