Newbie here.

I suspect it will take quite awhile to build up an inventory. Right now my awesome friends have given me items and I picked up the freebies from the shop and the Crane Game.

I'm used to another site that has avatars and over there I have a huge inventory after nearly 6 years of collecting.

One thing I wish this site had that is over at that site is the ability to preview outfits in the shops rather than on a naked base.

How do you all figure out what will look good together? Trial and error? Collecting and then just trying on and off?

Just trying to learn my way around here. :D

the other good thing is that everything layers - everything (so i'm going to send you another trade with the thing you got your white bear from, in case there's something else in there you want to equip.)

and yep, i figure out what looks good by trial and error. if i buy something and don't like it, i just sell it back. =)

Thanks so much, Trys. Love the layers. *big hug*

Good to know your process. Is the sell back the same price that you paid or less, like on UF?

you're quite welcome, Zen!

i think the sell back price is like 50% or something. i... haven't paid attention, honestly.

Sell back is 50%, correct.

The reason that the shop doesn't preview items on top of your current avatar is because of the layering system. The only thing it could really do is stick the item on the very top layer, and depending on what you are currently wearing, it might look pretty dumb that way; for example if you were previewing tall boots over a long skirt you were wearing, the boots would show on top and look really silly. By previewing it on a naked avi, you can see what the item looks like all on its own and then judge whether you think you like it.

I use a ton of trial and error in my layering. I typically pick a few items that I think will layer well, and then rearrange them, pick a few more, rearrange again, delete some, add some more, etc. Sometimes I set out to make an avi with a certain item, and by the end I'm not even wearing it anymore!

One tip I like to use, with small commons like socks, hair, or accessories I often equip 2-4 colors of the same item and switch around which one is on top, so I can quickly see which color of the item I want to use.

Thanks Lucid.

I like the strategy of having multiple colors to try out. It makes it almost as easy as having the color drop down option that I'm used to at another site.

We have sooo many colors, it can be really tempting, I find, to buy all the ones you think you might need, in case you... well, need them! But I find it easier to have a copy of each item I can get in a color set I know I love... For me, that's definitely coral. I use bright colors that contrast well with each other to simulate the layering I want before I dedicate myself to getting the items in the right colors. That's also why, when I want a new avi but have no new ideas, I usually end up wearing a coral of some kind!

^ Galla's tip is really good. I do this too, but my preferred color has changed so often I've had to buy a lot of colors anyway!

I have a solid stock of dirt cheap simple commons in every color. Bras, Kenny hair, socks, a couple accessories. This gives me flexibility to use blocks of any color in various parts of the body. Socks are extremely helpful as I find most of our leg gear doesn't suit my personal style.

I like both of your ideas Galla and Lucid.

I can see myself accumulating multiple item groups in a few of my favorite colors and I can see myself accumulating the free and inexpensive items in multiple colors to have more to play with. I've actually started to accumulate the free items in multiple colors.

My color tastes change too and if I accumulate more backgrounds or pets, then I'll want to coordinate outfits with those and hence more colors needed. ;)

I just buy all the colors to make it easy. .-. Never know what kind of mood I'll be in when making an avi, so always good to be prepared. Even if I don't use the rechid pinks I still buy them. x'D
