Aluminum actually isn't THAT bad for cookware. It conducts heat really well (almost as well as copper) and it's pretty durable (counterpoint, aluminum cookware is usually made too thin, which cuts into its durability). It's usually more the cheap nonstick coating that I worry about; it's not usually particularly good at not sticking to things, it tends to scratch really easily so you have to use wood or softer plastic utensils on it (though you should do this even with good Teflon), and it doesn't like getting washed or reheated over and over.

I would go get a few essentials from the dollar tree myself if I were in your shoes. it sucks that the roomie took everything, but then again I'm sure they need those supplies themself.

Edit: Sleepy, grammar getting bad. I think I'm just going to go to bed now.

I hope the cheap replacements you got are working out for you! I'm in the process of moving, and I've been basically getting rid of anything I don't immediately need and can easily and cheaply replace. It's a pretty wasteful attitude I guess, very much counter to what I was taught growing up, but it will be so much more convenient when I finally move and only have to take a couple dozen boxes with me!
