Charizard is considered a dragon.
Quote:
Charizard is a very dragon-like Pokémon.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...ok%C3%A9mon%29
-w- his offical types are fire/flying but he is considered a dragon. That and they had him in the dragon fronteir decks of the cards which consisted of all pokemon considered dragons.

and for Gyarados .. straight from bulbapedia
Quote:
Gyarados is a large dragon Pokémon, resembling dragons seen in Chinese mythology.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...ok%C3%A9mon%29

Just because their types are this and this doesn't make them non dragons

They resemble dragons, but they aren't dragons. They aren't dragon types, and they don't have the stats. MOST dragons are pseudolegendaries. Salamence and Dragonite for example.

Lance has three Dragonites. The only reason he had gyarados and aerodactyl is because in the original 150? There's only one dragon type, and that's the dratini line. No other pokemon from the 150 originals is a true dragon. Gyarados could learn dragon moves, but only pokemon with dragon types are true dragons.

Types are just what power they mainly use.
Considering is what they were based off of.

and I said that they are considered. which is why Lance used them.

and I also said just because their type is this and this doesn't mean that they aren't considered dragons.

Also Gen 1 and Gen 2 there was no such thing as Dragon TYPE. There was Psycic, Water, Rock, Fire, Normal/Special, Fighting, Poison, Electric, and Grass. Another reason why Charizard and Gyarados used to be considered Dragons.

Prior to Generation IV, where moves are designated physical or special based on the move itself rather than its type, all Dragon-type moves were special.

.... In gen 1 and 2 there is dragon TYPE. Dratini line is dragon type. I know. I grew up playing it. I know my copies of red and blue inside and out. I have no idea where you got that information. Not from playing the game. Dratini and Dragonair were single typed dragon, where dragonite is dragon and flying.

None of those pokemon are considered a dragon in any aspect beyond appearance. They don't even learn dragon type moves naturally. Charizard and Aerodactyl learn it by TM, gyarados does learn it naturally. Even then, Charizard and Aerodactyl don't even get it for super-effective hit, since Dragon rage is a fixed damage move. For all extensive purpose to use either as a "Dragon" pokemon is absolutely useless. Pseudodragon maybe, due to the appearance alone. At least Gyarados gets Twister, but twister wasn't released till Gen 2.

The flying pokemon that Lance use are only there because they learn dragon moves. Be it naturally or TM. (Aerodactyl learns dragon rage from TM.) Charizard wasn't given to him for the fact that it's a starter pokemon and for some reason or another Gamefreak deemed it best not to give Gym Leaders or Elite Four any starter pokemon or their evolutionary lines.

Show Me Your Teeth
I have yet to own this copy. Hopefully this next paycheck I'll be able to buy it. ^^

Just a thought. The original 150? More like the original 153? Ho-oh was seen in episode 1 and Togepi came later on in the season. Plus, there's Mew in the bunch. XD

Inari, that quote has nothing to do with the dragon type's existence. Dragon type existed in Gen 1. That quote means that dragon-type moves used to use the special stat in the damage calculation, along with psychic, water, fire, grass, et cetera. Ghost, Fighting, Normal, Poison, et cetera used the attack stat.

I don't agree that Gyarados and Charizard are dragons. Just because Bulbapedia describes them as looking like dragons doesn't mean anything. Arcanine is a "legendary pokemon" according to early pokedex entries, because he's based on a legend. But that doesn't make him a legendary pokemon at all, just like Gyarados being based on Chinese dragons does not make him a dragon pokemon.

Games came out before the show. Pokemon yellow the sprites were changed to look more like the show, due to complaint. If you look at red and blue a lot of pokemon don't really look like how you expect.
If you want to get technical, it's 151. Mew being the 151st.

When the show came out, gen 2 was already being produced, it just wasn't released.

Lucid: Exactly!! Ninetales would be a legendary too, by that definition.

Neither Ninetales or Arcanine qualify even for pseudolegendary status -- which the only qualifier for such is to have stat numbers that equate to that of base stats of legendaries.

Oh another thing I forgot: Flint has a steelix, driftblim and a lopunny. Neither of those pokemon are considered fire types because of this.

This is only for Diamond and Pearl. In plat they change his team.

So the reasoning behind them being considered dragons because Lance has them is really not quite sound.
