I'm looking to buy a new computer...or? | #1
I'm thinking of either getting a new desktop computer or a laptop but I'm not sure which is best or what to get, I've been looking around and I love HPs but they cost so much and I am just not sure what to do, can anyone help me figure out what should I do?

I hate HP...but that's an age old grudge from my first computer.
What are you going to use it for? Do you want it just for home? Or do you want something more portable? Or would you be like me who gets a laptop because they don't want to buy a computer screen and peripherals...and so it sits like a desktop? XD For laptops though: Toshiba and Acer have never done me wrong.

If you get an HP don't get a touch screen DB.
I love Hp, and in comparison you can get a pretty good one depending on where you shop for under 400. I got mine from Walmart for about 350. It is a laptop. I would also recommend you checking out Bestbuy open-box deals. When something is returned, formally on display or may have minor damage they discount it and sale it. As for why not a touch screen. I have to re-calibrate my screen to sync with my touch pad. If I don't I get an error message, it blue screens and I have to restart my computer. It also zooms randomly.

Toshiba has a really good reputation and good prices. ASUS is pretty solid too. I don't like HP because they're overpriced for what you get and come preloaded with too much junk. Sony made really good hardware, but they were expensive, and got out of the laptop business anyway.
I would actually recommend getting a touchscreen though. Windows 10 is SO much nicer when you have one. Games by Coda (updated 4/15/2024 - New game: Call of Aether)

I was looking at a touch screen laptop and it did seem pretty nice but the price was crazy high almost 400 dollars for the darn thing and here's the problem I have I would love a laptop however I have two cats, I'm not sure if my cats would kill it or not, I'm thinking of getting a laptop but trying to keep my two cats in mind.
I have a desktop as of right now and it's nice it's doing the trick but I need a gaming computer to play some of the games I wanna play online. I tried to play Ark survival evolved and no luck there this computer cannot handle it. D:

400 dollars is not a high price for a laptop....it's on the cheaper end, especially with a touch screen. Mine was 500 and no touch screen (and that's still on the cheaper end).
You want a gaming computer? You're going to have to spend more than 400 dollars.

Its been my experience that people get laptops either for the price or mobility. Unless you are wiling to spend the money, you may have to get another desktop or simply invest in upgrading your current one. Last time I checked, one terrabite harddives on a desktop were alot cheaper than a laptop. And a desktop would have more disc space for gaming or universal programming needs.
I also don't really know how easy it is to replace components if something breaks down or if it needs an upgrade, like a graphics card or speakers or the keyboard. With my old laptop, which I used heavily for art and games, once the usb drives went down that was all she wrote. As far as pets, with a touch screen you run into the same problem you would have with a normal laptop. The fur actually really gets on the key board. >.>

No my desktop cannot handle Ark at all, this thing is not built for gaming I found out and it cannot hold a bigger graphics card or anything.
Which is why I was looking for a new computer in the first place, something that can handle Ark. lol

I second what Yoku said or trying to find a refurbished one you can upgrade. A lot of mom and pop computer shops that are certified computer specialist where I live sell refurbished laptops starting at around 150.

+1 to refurbished laptops. If you don't absolutely need the high-end power of the latest model, getting a not-yet-obsolete used one is a great way to save money and keep yourself online.

a desktop is going to be more powerful for less money than a laptop, but a laptop is going to be, well, lighter and smaller and more mobile. A "gaming laptop" that's actually powerful enough to play the same sorts of games you'd play on a gaming desktop is going to be very expensive, more than a thousand dollars. A decent, budget gaming desktop you can build for probably around $800.
