I usually start with a hair, so...whatever color hair looks best at the moment decides my avatar colors.

I got a ton of stuff from a friend who quit trisphee so...

Same, the hair dictates the rest, or eye color (if I use any). Usually, though, I do only black or red hair (though now it's both, haha). I prefer my silvery/white skin over flesh toned. So from there I just add basic colors.

Your avatars are all so colorful and diverse. I use the same items over and over again. XD And the same colors.
