Default Why does v-day always turn into disappointment?   #1
Every year i noticed with myself and friends and even family that v-day is made into this really large hype but the day after i hear everyone complain that it wasn't up to their expectations. Why do we make such large expectations for this holiday but not for something like easter or even our friends birthdays.
I'm not even gonna say our own birthdays because there's a weirdness with them to, we flip out about them no matter our age.. gotta be sweet 16 or awesome drink 21 but once you get to 24 your like omg i'm gettin old... so skip the personal birthday refs.

anyway point is what is it that causes us to believe our boyfriend/girlfriend going to be more then we ever expected to be on this day alone when you don't give them any other requirements any other day?

Something i would like to mention.
A poem that i read some time ago that should really be noted on this day.
"The Gestalt Prayer"
" I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations
and you are not here for mine.
You are you and I am I.
If by chance we find each other, that's beautiful
if not it can't be helped."
By Fritz Perls

If everyone shared this same idea, wouldn't we not be disappointed by days like this?

It's really a dumb holiday.
I don't set expectations for anything anymore. When I was little I learned not to because things never lived up to them.
I think people should just not expect anything, and then be thrilled if they actually get something, rather than being disappointed.

I prefer Easter over V-day. It has better chocolates and not a lot of the crowd as yesterday had with last minute shoppers.

At highschool you could buy - as a guy - a rose that would be delivered to someone anonymously. Not that I expected one - but I never gotten one. Together with 3 other girls in class. I'd almost say Valentines Day is bad for your self-esteem, at such points.
Gladly it's not too much of a hype in the Netherlands.

though already sick of chocolate, I ended up getting a box of chocolate from the person I'm dating, ended up sharing it with them and my sis.
I think I used to be more down about holidays... but it is the only one that people don't make a huge deal about, and less fights and all,
so I think I have to respect it (some) and it is around the same time I first started dating, neither of us remembered the exact day so kind of picked v-day as the anniversary dating date

so I guess it is more special to some than others

though my other sister keeps mixing it up with the Japanese holidays in her comic books the day boys get chocolate and the other day the girls get something white... (that was a bit off topic but yeah)

uh and peeps are out on other holidays too even if they are shaped different they still taste the same...

I'm with Iggy on the 'expectations' part(and the whole post really). It makes life a lot easier not to expect anything, especially such big things.

V-day is just another day for me, with an excuse to buy (or receive) chocolate. Otherwise, I have fun like any other day, with my family, my sisters and my guy. My whole family just orders take out and we eat together- nothing big.

Besides, I love chocolate, who cares where it came from! XD

Long, long hiatus.

Candy-wise, I like Halloween :P I'm a romantic, but often times romance is better as a surprise. That and Halloween is more fun. You can be single and still get chocolates!!!!

In the end, it's just another day, so it doesn't really matter much to me. I mean the idea of Valentines is nice, but really you should love your other 1/2 all the time. @_@
It really is a pointless holiday. ; ~;

I don't have any expectations towards V-Day whatsoever..
I don't really see what it's good for anyway...
I mean if you're in love doesn't that mean you should show it all year round and not just a single day in February >_>

To me, Valentine's Day is just a fun little day where you're allowed to do sappy things for your friends and significant other without feeling like its too cheesy. There's lots of fun to be had in making tiny, cute cards to give out just to show your friends and family that they are loved.

And when I don't have anyone particular to share Valentine's Day with, I use it as an opportunity to love myself for a day. I make plans to watch one of my favorite movies, buy myself some chocolate, and color hearts on stuff. xP

Holidays aren't about some higher "meaning" that makes everything we do worthwhile. Life can be dim and difficult... holidays are about finding things to celebrate and learning to utilize that to its fullest. Whether it be celebrating a lover, or just loved ones, Valentine's Day is a chance to look back and see that everyone has love in their lives, whether they notice it day-to-day or not.

And if you can't find any love in your life, it's a great day to start loving yourself just a little more.
