I've fought boob pudding twice. But sometimes I don't see/read those messages. For example I just lost a battle without even realizing I ever clicked the fight button...

Yes, I think the game puts your avatar in, even if the fight window is closed, as it probably takes a minute or so to update. Plenty of time to suffer losses and 503s.
