Well it really does depend on how often one re-reads things, and books like that are darn cheap.

I renewed my library book, yes I'm reading that slowly, but I seem to have now developed a level of comfort or immunity with the gunge. It's been in my hands long enough. :)

I cant hardly stand it if someone writes in, or dog ears a page. If the page gets dog eared enough the corner will tear. I will buy a used book as long as it's not going to fall apart on me any time soon (and has no dog eared pages)

It's sad that your dad tears up the books as he reads. If I saw that happen it would make me cry. It would be better off to just donate it to the library if they won't be read again.

Yeah but these books are the kind that even the libraries wont take. We're talking on their last strings of tacky binding here, if there's a cover left to speak of at all, with pages that are probably only half-glued in. You could consider it mercy killing ;).

I write in my college texts. It's almost a right of passage in a way, but I'm still picky about mangled pages. My copy of Hamlet has passages that are coated in a couple different colours of pen and three different colours of highlighter depending on what it was I was looking for at the time. Same goes for some of my poetry anthologies. My book of poetry by Percey Shelley actually used to be my dad's when he was at university so it has two generations of notes in it in pencil and pen. I find that neat actually.

nostalgic
1) who tears off pages in books when your done reading them, in a year or two you might want to read it again
2) i try to keep books nice but i end up leaving them in my backpack when the books cover will most likely get ripped off, or on my bed, where the book gets all folded

Has not yet happened so far. The one's he wants to read again he buys in hardcover. That's one book so far.

There's always the library too. ;).

The books I am looking for don't seem to be online line, which is rather annoying at times, but paper books are still cheaper often if I know the specific book I'm looking for. I'm trying to track down mystery novels by Caroline Graham and they'r proving elusive.

I'm stil trying to find good cheap mangas, but my problem is that I don't have money in my paypal account, and I'm saving my money for the small things online like the boots that I can't seem to find in stores

I don't think you are weird since I generally try and do so with mine or any that are loaned to me. I despise when people mistreat and abuse books.

Ho! Miscreant!
That's not odd at all.
I like keeping my books put up in a neat fashion. I admit that I probably don't read my books in the greatest manor, but at least I don't tear out pages or dog ear. When done with my books, I usually donate them to the local library or to a needy school.

Then they're no friends of mine ~

NO, YOU ARE NOT AN ODDBALL.

I do the EXACT same thing, and it drives people nuts! I can stand there in a bookstore, and literally take 20 minutes comparing which one is in better condition. It makes people who buy me books as gifts frustrated. xD

When I read, I read. I open the book and enjoy the story.
If it gets a little bent in the process, I dont mind.
Usually when im done with a book, I slap a Bookcrossing sticker on the front inside cover and ship it on its way.

That neat! Haven't seen much like it myself. When I was travelling in Northern Europe hostels often had 'take a book, leave a book shelves' and it was neat to see all the languages they came in, but I didn't want to part with the book I was reading at the time. Decided to lug it home for my shelf, even though I haven't read it since.

I know people who do what your aunt does, and that always makes me cringe. My partner loves to read, but doesn't really handle books with care, especially paperbacks. But I would probably cry if I saw someone tear out pages of a book and throw them away! That poor book! Now no one can ever read it again! T^T However, I have actually done that with a friend once before. It was a bible. And we put the pages to good use - origami animals. >.>
