Default Is my art okay?   #1
I just got a tablet and I suck at it and I haven't drawn in ages honestly... Is my art good though?

Practicing anatomy, be warned boobies:

And then this suck-ish avatar art of my avatar on Gaia, I tried to make it look chibi but failed ._.:

Will be going into somewhat-unimportant details, so feel free to ignore...Also, don't get discouraged. I just critique a lot.

Morbidly Obsessed
I agree a bit with Espy regarding the first one, unless there's another piece to compare it to, the definition of good can be viewed differently.
But seeing that I don't use a tablet -stares at the tablet sitting in it's box still in bubble wrap-.. I am not huge into criticizing other people's work so feel free to ignore what I post.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with chibis until you have a better feel for your own style.

To really say anything, I have to know: did you start with a basic sketch/skeleton, or just work it as you went?

i think before you start doing anything as specialized as chibis, you want to work on your own style and skill

first of all, on tablet drawing. unless you're just doing rough sketches of character designs or something similar try not to get the "hairy line" look that's going on here. I discourage doing this in ANY drawing, weather it's rough sketches or planning or wot. just try to stop it, now. go for an even, straight single line, or at most a couple of lines.

when practicing proportion, don't be afraid to use models. google images of people in certain clothing or positions to practice on those. try to make your proportion practices compositinoally interestnig to look at, otherwise you could lose interest quickly

'ok' is a relative term. i'll say these images aren't ok because they are not interesting and have several flaws. but it's not like you don't have talent, because you obviously do. just keep working at it.
good luck
bitches please

Wow, thank you for all the replies! c: Yeah, I'm not great at drawing but getting critique really helps and I hope to improve. I will start using references and look at anatomy and all that and I just drew as I went, I didn't use a reference for the anatomy part but for the avatar I used my Gaia avatar as a reference. This all really means a lot and I will keep drawing and maybe practice drawing avatars on here and make them freebies before I get better. c:

Daring Scylla - How do I stop making the hairy lines? ;~; I don't know how to make clean, straight lines using a tablet and using SAI...

Gallagher - I didn't use a base or skeleton, I just basically free draw and have a picture in my head and draw it.

Espy - Thank you for being honest and giving me great critique. c:

Pinkie - You'll get the feel of it. c: I'm terrible at it and have to erase A LOT, but it's quite fun when you get the hang of it.

Before I read through everything else: SAI is, in my opinion, one of the easiest programs to get clean lines in. You always want to use multiple layers, especially if you're starting out, and make a pose skeleton first, then an outline, then the actual lines. (Least, that's what I do.)

To add to Gall's point: Drawing as you go really isn't a good idea unless you're really, reaaaally well-versed in your own style. Even I can't "draw as I go".

Yeah, that makes me more impressed with what you've done, BUT if you're going to take this seriously, you really want to find a type of base you can doodle out quickly to get that pose and those proportions more on mark. That will do WONDERS for you as you keep practicing right there. You might do well breaking the body down into curves in your style. Personally, I use modified stick figures.

AND ON ANOTHER NOTE, I am a very big fan of sketchy lines and use them myself. You do not have to scrap them entirely. That being said, learning how to do clean lines, too, will save you a lot of time as you get better and want to produce cleaner works.

Try to avoid only doing simple standing poses and such as you practice anatomy. You really want to do as many different things as you can, so you can get a good feel for how the body really WORKS. The better you know our anatomy and movement, the easier it will be to get things right the first time.

Thanks you two! I will keep trying and I am so glad you two are honest with me! c: I'll try to practice smooth lines while still keeping my sketchy lines and try to improve. Thank you!
