I have this problem too, the tabs for the body/face/hair, etc. dont have any options to choose from in them

Have you picked up the free items from the shops? (I want to say, Threads, Body Shop, and Trinkets). If not, you won't have any starting items.
Admittedly, it's a little confusing at first.

Yeah, unfortunately you don't get any items at the start. But there are some free items in the shops! ^^

You can also play the Crane Game for items! :D

Oh, you may a;so need to click the gender button to make sure your gender is set correctly. I've got a first time user guided mode planned, but it's not ready yet.
