The PSP was probably my favorite system, it doesn't seem like they really make classic-style RPGs on the major consoles now. Everything is some kind of action-RPH hybrid, which is fine, but I miss the old-school style games.

Of course, that's what emulators (and my phone :P) are good for. Though, oddly enough no one's been able to come up with an emulator for PSP games yet.

Anyway, on the PSP, Spectral Souls and Blazing Souls are both amazing FFT-style games. And of course, all of Nippon Ichi's catalogue, Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom. So many awesome games on there. @_@

I would imagine they don't cost much anymore. I need to get a new one. I replaced my broken one last year, but I stepped on it by accident and cracked the screen like 2 days after the warranty ran out. D:

It used to be really expensive (I paid $100 for my PS1 copy) but they rereleased it on the PSP (more completely remade it into the most awesome thing ever). If you have a PSP, I can only give it my highest recommendation. It is possibly *better* than FFT in my mind. The remake, that is. The original was good, but there's really no comparison.

I could never really get into 10. The series kind of lost me when it transitioned to 3d, honestly. 7 was the last one I really liked. I stopped playing at X-2.

Did you ever happen the play Tactics Ogre? It's the game most similar to FFT.

Yes, after I beat it I did an entire playthough using enemy-only classes. That was fun.

And pretty much every boss is immune to all status, so that's out the window. :P

Also, for your boss there, I would gear everyone to 999 hp and equip Meatbone Slash. He'll eat 5000~ damage when he uses that special skill :P

(At least, he would in the 1.3 mod, in the vanilla game M. Slash might be melee range only, I can't remember. In the mod it hits them no matter how far away you are, which makes for interesting strategies.)

Alas, Non-Charge is AI only. You can hack it in if you want. :P Kletian's Sorcerer class has it innately. Which, by the way, the battle where you fight him, Vormaw, and Rofel inside the temple is another Elmdor nightmare. There's all kinds of insane gear up for grabs there (Chaos Blade, Robe of Lords, Mace of Zeus, etc), but in those confined spaces, they will slaughter you within a turn or two with sword skills or instant-cast All Ultima.

I did fight the priest. I couldn't figure out how to do it, there was just no way to damage him enough to bring him down between the regen and the jumping.

Would love to hear about your hypothetical boss, though. ;)

I am an internet addict, I can't help going to the boards of games I'm playing. :P

And when I say clones I mean people with their classes, they usually look like Knights or Geomancers. Which just adds insult to injury lol.

I was too scared to even attempt that stage. O_O

There's also a Priest with 50 speed (the max you can have) who has Jump, and has "Non-Charge" as his support skill for all his spells. He regens 999 hp per round and spends most of the fight in the air. I think he might have been the hardest fight in there.

Honestly, there were other mods I enjoyed more, that redid the entire class system, making it essentially an entirely new game. But the challenge was... fulfilling, at least, when I finally beat it.

I think I learned the meteor trick from the forums.

And keep in mind, those are optional challenges. Only the hardest of the hardcore need apply. ;) And the Coliery battles aren't actually that hard if you know what to expect going in.

Deep Dungeon on the other hand, well, you basically fight entire armies of enemies with 1000s of HP who have incredibly broken ability combos. I know on the first floor there's a fight with 3 clones of Orlandu, 3 clones of Agrias, and 3 clones of Meliadoul all at once. And that's one of the easier ones.

One of worst is a group of bards, dancers, and mimes with I believe 9999 hp, who get into a feedback loop of buffing themselves to insane stats and start all the way at the bottom of that giant zig-zag map and won't move until you get down there.

I'd beaten it like 20 times on "easy" before, so the challenge was an awesome change.

And the meteor KILLS YOU, and all the enemies, and then you revive. It is glorious. :D I think they lowered the charging time on all the spells, which is a double edged sword. ;)

And no, no you cannot dual wield guns. The enemy engineers can. The game starts outright cheating at that point. And, well, it requires another very specific setup. You have to have your entire party equipped with guns, and with hamedo, on your people with the highest Brave, and let them just keep shooting you and shooting back until the tide turns in your favor. And getting lucky.

And Deep Dungeon was all kinds of insane. I never beat even a quarter of the new battles in it. I believe all of the Lucavi at once was one of the easier battles.

(continued, damn it I'm longwinded) As for challenges, well, the Coliery Underground in Goland where you get Beowulf was totally redesigned into the most insane hell-on-earth battles you could imagine. (1. You fight five copies of the old Orlandu. 2. You fight 8 "Engineers" dual wielding the new guns who can have infinite phoenix downs and elixirs to revive each other. 3. You fight 8 Assassins 4. Is nowhere near as bad, but is still a tough boss battle (tough by the mod's standards)).

And then there's the Deep Dungeon!
