40 feet easy maybe more if the ship is large enough, and it prolly would not hit water unless it went sideways and it'd tip the boat if it did


considering the rigging it'd prolly get tangled before hitting the deck, so unless the ropes all came down along with everything else it'd just put a hole in the deck and cratch the heel out of the wood
