They will tell you that
“Life is a precious thing”
and the days will fade
like lies that are nothing to fear
until all that is left
are mornings for mourning,
moments falling like leaves
to the march of an autumn sun.

And he couldn't bear to be there
in the orchard, in the peaks of summer,
seeing split skulls wherever the apples fell,
it's no wonder he ran away.

But the lips of Death say nothing,
sealed tight without a secret to give shape,
no rumor for the nightly wind
to carry off to other airs,
no salience to render from the dawn,
not a word for world to remain.

Among the Dying Dogwoods

Alone with a winter storm, she stands
on the last, crownless hill,
all wilting samite, feet curled like withering roots,
our precious wife of God.

In her gaze, the stars reflected,
brazen idols burning in the holocaust of time,
molting death given wings of fire,
incinerating hope in the emptying sky.

And the tempest comes, shrieking havoc,
ripping at her lovely gown,
devouring her breath, consuming every cry
of that crippled voice.

Hear the words, of her prayer,
her singular prayer,
echoed from every child's mouth,
a petal's plunge into a crashing tide.

And she falls, our dearest,
our darling bloom, she falls,
there upon that hill, kneeling on the bones,
at last the victim of the wind.

Wonderful poems but just thought you would like to know that in poems it is gramatically correct to capitalize all beginning letters in a piece of poetry, like below
Is it true?
Is that really what you think of me?
Who I am
Is not your problem
Who I will be
Is not your business
Who I was
Is all you can see?
‘Cause that’s me
That is what I want
You to think
Fooled you all
Had you wrapped around my little finger
‘Cause the girl you knew
Is gone
Kept under lock and key
Because you refused to see the truth
So mask was born
It is the perfect child
Don’t you agree?
But you see
It isn’t me
And one day
I’m going to explode
Going to make a mistake
Then you are going to know the real me
And you are going to be afraid

Poems are one of the few forms of literature that allow you to use incorrect grammar though. I like your poems alot. :)

Haven't been here in a while. Just read your poem with the Dogwoods. I find it interesting, since dogwoods used to grow along the embankment surrounding my elementary school and I used to walk around them. But, like any of your stuff Sheol, I'll need to read it a few more times before making up my mind on it. ;)

And Love, I've actually been thinking about the capitalization thing lately. I don't think it's considered 'grammatically correct' as much as something that was traditional to do. I was taught in elementary school that the first letter in a line of poetry always had a capital letter, but this seems not to be the case anymore from the more modern poetry I've been reading, especially in poems that otherwise follow normal punctuation between lines.

Every line being capitalized is an eyesore to me, it ejects me right out of the poem. It's like seeing a random capital letter mid-sentence. Which, granted, is actually within a poet's purview if it serves some purpose, but that's completely beside the point.

Anyway, I assure you, the lack of capitalization is entirely willful, intentional, and considered on my part. I have precious little respect for formal poetry, anyway.

Seems it might have been something of a fashion at one point, or something for nitpicky people, like the Oxford comma. I was tought to use that too. ;).

Sorry I didn't mean to offend you, I guess I;m just used to formal writing styles more than freeverse. My grammer and writing teachers would always yell at my class when we would forget to capatalize the first word of each line intentional or not.

Don't mind me, I'm an English major who despises literature and literary theory; I tend to say to Hell with the rules more often than not, and if some elitist academic in an ivory tower has a problem with it, to Hell with them too. >_>

*ahem* Sorry. Anyway, not offended, though if you want people to comment on your own poetry, it would be a good idea to make your own topic rather than post it in someone else's, you're likely to get more attention that way.

Curiously, it was the creative writing majors at my university that were the rules sticklers. Most of us Lit majors didn't really care. Watch literature shift over a few hundred years and rules and norms start to seem less important.

I still do capitalize my poetry lines though, even my free verse poems. ;)
