o_o Why are you using Fahrenheit, Ashykins? D: I've no clue what temperature you're talking about. D:
because otherwise the american dont know what temperature it is, and they outnumber us ari T_T

Lurker of Lurkiness
Hehe I know -40 is the same, 0°C/32°F, 21-22ish °C is room temperature, and 100°C = 212°F owo;;
But yeah, I can basically figure out that around 40°C would be hot and anything below 0°C is cold XD
As fabulous and pretty as they are, Ulti's avatars are always male~

We're all mad here.
Celsius decided to set 0 degrees at water's freezing point so yeah, it's cold.

I think Fahrenheit set 0 degrees at the coldest measurable temperature at the time. Thus it seems a little arbitrary now, but made sense back then.

It would be nice if the degrees were the same size though. Not sure how they decided what the difference between degrees would be on either side.

Well, at least we aren't using Kelvin.....that would be horribly confusing.

In both cases, the size of the degree is determined by TWO set points on the scale.

Fahrenheit used a cold winter day for his 0 point and his own body temperature for his 100 point. Apparently, it was a VERY cold winter day, and he was sick at the time. Once he had marked off the scale on his thermometer, he could calibrate new thermometers against the old ones without having to find exactly the same original sources.

Celsius saw the problem with having unrepeatable calibration and chose to set the 0 and 100 points based on something you can easily reproduce: the temperature of water as it's freezing (because it won't go past 0C until it's frozen), and the temperature of water as it's boiling (because it won't go past 100C until it's vapor).

coda's right, the difference is one was a scientist and the other wasnt. farenheit's scale is based on observation where celsius is the improved version of it

Of course, the Celsius scale isn't defined by the freezing point of water anymore. Now it's defined by setting the triple point of a very special form of distilled water (one that has a specific abundance of different isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen) as 0.01C and absolute zero as -273.15C. (The triple point of a substance is a temperature and pressure at which solid, liquid, and gas can coexist in equilibrium.) This means the boiling point of water at sea level is technically 99.9839C, not 100C.

The change was made because water's boiling point varies pretty dramatically with barometric pressure. If you pick up a pot of water 28 centimeters, its boiling point decreases by 0.001C!
