30. Through The Never - 2013

Not sure whether this would be called a movie or a really long music video, but with the story aspect, I'm calling it a movie. ;)

Essentially, Metallica's concert in Vancouver, BC, at GM place (now Rogers Arena) with a story going on about a drugged up (we assume) roady running an errand around the city while encountering some messed up stuff. I quite like it, but also having lived in Vancouver, it's fun to see all the havoc wreaked in familiar streets.



I'm also going to change the title of this thread to "films" rather than movies, since all manner of film media can be added.

Updating the thread "rules" here, and opening it up to specific episodes in a series as I figure that still qualifies as "film."

I'm also going to start adding page divisions or post numbers to the front list to keep things organized as the list gets larger.

31. "Hush" (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 4) - 1999

The only Buffy episode to be nominated for an Emmy (or so I'm told). Due to a curse on Sunnydale the people lose their voices so the bulk of the episode has no dialogue. It's done all through gesture and music, and done very well in my opinion, especially the ending.

There's stuff in there that probably matters more to people familiar with the characters, but it still good enough to watch solo, I think, just to see how it was done.

Apparently people were annoyed that The Simpsons missed a chance to spoof it, but I think they were actually referencing Rebel Without a Cause. The Room might have been trying to do that too.

32: The Room (2005)

This movie should be a must watch by everyone. It is called Blade Runner and it came out in its original theatrical release in 1982. I find this movie timeless. The themes are universal, and without giving too much away, it is still relevant today. Four Replicants (IA's) escape an off-world colony, Harrison Ford (the Blade Runner) is hired to track them down and terminate them. The Tyrell Corporations motto: More human than humans.

It really is a classic, and has a huge cult following. A sequel is in the making. I sincerely hope they don't screw it up.

The Others (2001) is a must-watch according to me. I especially love watching it with subtitles because every dialogue is foreshadowing or significant or just... cannot be done away with. I feel it really did something different in the psychological horror genre. I absolutely loved it in terms of plot and story, which isn't common in the horror genre.
Plus Nicole Kidman kills it, and so does Alakina Mann :3

34. Logan (2017)

I debated putting this here, as it might be more of must watch for X-Men fans. I certainly was surprised at how moved I was by parts of this film after growing up watching the cartoon all the time. I haven't watched an X-Men film since Origins: Wolverine, and only saw the first two X-Men proper movies. I like how they worked in the plot details for what was going on. I thought they had some creative ideas, and the made sense. Good depth for a superhero film.

I have to mention Oldboy. Watched it recently and now I have to call it one of my favourites of a lifetime. It's one of those movies I think everyone should watch, to see what kind of effect it has on them. If the director set out with the intention of exercising the viewer's moral imagination, he couldn't have done it better.

I heard of that film! It was on a list of weird movies to watch. I didn't recall the name but I remember the description. I'm on the fence about whether to watch it myself, since the psychology seems fascinating, but not sure how I feel about the imprisonment thing.

The way the film is made makes much of the difficult-to-stomach stuff non-visceral, at least that's what I felt. And the imprisonment is packed into the first ten minutes or so of the film. The friend who gave it to me said it deals with difficult stuff, and when I asked her what it was about, she said 'I can't tell you that.' And for myself I think it was the best way to go into watching the film.

I would recommend watching it, to anyone and everyone. It won't make for pleasant viewing, but the stuff has a point, it's not just shock-value-porn. And like I said, it's mostly non-visceral so potential shock is purposely dulled (though experiences may differ.)

Yeah, that's where I'm on the fence about some films. I watch bad horror and some things for spectacle but others, especially the stuff that hit's hard, not so much. Some unpleasant films can be worthwhile to see but it depends a lot of mood, for me.

On that previous note, I was thinking about this movie recently. It sort of fall between the two of spectacle and having a point, though I'm not entirely sure what the point is.

36. Mama (2013)

The IMDb description is pretty basic: "A young couple take in their 2 nieces only to suspect that a supernatural spirit named Mama has latched itself to their family." That's the gist of it, yes, but the execution is very thoughtful. The film shows you what's happening, but doesn't necessarily tell you why, or at least not all of "why." The beginning is ambiguous, as is the ending. I'd personally suggest watching the opening and opening credits of the film to see if that catches your attention, even if you watch nothing else.

The Korean movie 'Method'. It had largely polarized audience reactions and the only critic response I could find was negative... but I'm going to go as far as to say that it's one of my favourite movies of all time. It awed me. The ending is what disappointed so many people, however the ending is what blew my mind. I loved the acting, the aesthetic, the soundscore, and the story (which went from rare-quality BL... to fave BL ever with that ending, in the process having me throw several personal parameters of what makes a good BL out the window.

Parts of it are more accessible if there's some familiarity with the basics of how the k-pop industry works, and also with Asian BL. The former gives a clue to the character of Youngwoo in the film and, in the process, a clue to the ending (that can probably be seen only in hindsight anyway, though.) The latter might mislead because there were a couple of identifiable BL tropes, but like I've implied, this is far from a traditional BL and needs to be watched with none of the associated expectations (OH. BUT. There are some realllyyyy hot kisses >///< which is rare for BL, so hallelujah to that.)

Also there's been a lot of debate on whether it's BL or not. Rest assured, it IS BL. If y'all want to discuss on this further, hit me up after watching it and I'll tell you why

Anyway. It should be watched, because while you might hate it, you might love it (all the people I've come across who loved it thought it was a masterpiece, haha.)

Hold on, hold on. You really turned off The Room after thirty minutes? You missed some of the best parts, you know. I think that movie is incredible watchable, for a bad movie. Like, it kept me interested. It's not like any other bad movie, like Plan 9 gets boring in some parts, The Room holds my attention with it's awfulness for every single second.
