Default L5R (Legend of the Five Rings CCC)   #1
Anyone play this collectible card game? If so, what clans do you primarily use? I am a new player and diving in head first. I think it is an interesting concept for a CCC because the players actually shape the on-going plot and story events.

We're all mad here.
Haven't played it myself but I picked up some cards to look at. I have a feeling I would probably lean Crane or Unicorn. Unicorn because I like horses and cavalry, and it would be like me to build a deck with that in mind, ;), and Crane because it reminds me of Blue, the more sneaky, board control style of play in Magic the Gathering, which I'm starting to like.

Not sure if I have it right though. I'm basing it off of the basic review of the clans that I saw on the back of a L5R box.

Quiet: Oh man! I had missed your post and then the thread got eaten by time~

Unicorn is definitely horse-based I have found. And the crane, as I have seen it played, do well with Honor and and controlling the board that way.

The Courtiers are the political representation of the clans across Rokugan. C:

How do those things come out in gameplay? Like what would politics let me do versus ancestors, etc.?

Well, let's say I play Lion Ancestors. That's a deck about gaining honor, to get to 40 which lets you win the game.

But if I play Politics, I am probably trying to dishonor my opponent or stop them from attacking me, if not both. I would win by getting them to -20 honor.

If I am playing Siege, I would play cards that up my province strength and lower theirs to eventually leave them at a constant 0 province strength so I can destroy them consistently until I raze all 4 of their provinces, winning a military victory.

Ah. So in effect, honour is like life and your provinces would be resources? You run out of one or the other and it's game over?

Provinces produce your personalities (whom you defend your provinces with when you buy them out) and also your gold/resources used to buy said personalities and weapons to equip.

Honor is kind of like your secondary life, yes. Your opponent can win if they make you go down to -20 honor. You can counter act it with different honor gaining cards/abilities, and you can win once you reach +40 honor.

Then there are the 5 rings. To win that way is to "Enlighten out". The game gets it's namesake from the rings in play (Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Void). If you get them ALL into play, you win.

So, there are 4 ways to win. At least the card game. Dishonor your opponent, honor yourself, destroy all 4 of their provinces with military, and enlightenment.

Provinces are 4 spaces between the two decks you have, called Dynasty and Fate decks. Cards from your Fate deck are drawn into your hand and often either have action effects to help you, or they can be followers, items, and spells to attach to things.

Provinces are filled by cards from your Dynasty deck, which can be events, holdings, personalities, regions, or celestials.

Rings go in your fate deck.
